Water drain=Black gunk???

So I drained the fuel filter drain into a small glass jar today to see just how much water I would get...well I didnt get any water, but I did get some black sludge crap, not alot, but maybe an ounce or two...anyone have any idea on the black sludge?

I will drain again once I drive the truck tomorrow to see what I get.

First, fill out your sig so we know what we're working with.

Second, I assume you have a third gen, since you posted here.

Do you run WMO? (waste motor oil) That can be a big factor in a nasty filter.

If you have a truck that has 200k on it, and this is the first time you have drained the WIF or changed the filter... it'll be black. Change your FF ever other oil change to be safe, once ever 6 months to be a normal person (that runs only pump diesel). Drain the WIF every time you get fuel.

HTH. Any more questions or info, post it up.

Hmmm, I thought I had filled out the sig, I will get on that.

It's an 04.5 with 38K, the owner before me ran Bio. I changed the fuel filter about 2K miles ago and have run nothing but clean #2 for the last several thousand miles since I got it. The first time I tried to drain it nothing came out...

You could have algae growing in there.

It's algae. Algae will grow in biodiesel or regular diesel if water is present. Need to use a biocide to make sure all the aglae is removed. We use Biobor from Hammonds. Usually can find the biocide at your local airport.

Your local airport? Is that codename for a truck stop or something?

At work we use a product called EZ Oil, we've had great results with all of their products.

Yikes, thanks for the replys guys. Is it possible for the Algae to be growing only in the fuel filter bowl? Once the black stuff stopped (not much) it was nothing but clean #2. Should I just treat the whole tank?

Yep. Use it to treat jet fuel. Last thing you would want is algae growing in the fuel tanks. Could ruin your whole day.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to treat everything at the same time. If you have Algae in your fuel filter housing, chances are something is bound to be in your tank.
