Gunk In Fuel Filter Housing

Gunk In Fuel Filter Housing
Changed the fuel and air filter the other day 30,000 miles on the clock
shortly after changing the filter the WIF light came on. stopped the truck and drained the housing , still had the light.
later that day I reopened the housing and pulled the new filter and actually looked into the bottom of the housing. the ammount of crap/sludge / rust, that was there was amazing. there was even a small amount of water. I had never had any water show in the fuel before and occasionally drain and catch the fuel in a glass jar and check that it is clear and bright.
before i trbought the truck it sat on the lot since middle 05 i bought it in feb 07 lesson here is
1. change your filter on a new truck quickly especially if it has sat on the lot for a while with less than a quarter tank of fuel ( i am afraid to see what the tank looks like
2. LOOK!!!! into the housing when changing the filter , i was in a rush and didnt .....
and it wasnt water that caused the WIF light to come on, it was a piece of debris that was laying across both probes of the WIF sensor.....
could have been a disaster
the dealers practice of not keeping fuel tanks filled up can cause a serious problem later .....

There was a recall on the 06's where a piece of tubing was added to the top vent of the fuel tank. There is a nipple on there that in the right conditions would be submerged in dirty water and dirt, thus allowing it into the tank/Fuel system. I have heard you can add some Biocide to the fuel tank in case there is Algae in there. If it sat for 2 years I might just suggest dropping the tank and cleaning it real well.

If it sat that long you probably should just drop the tank and clean it out. If nothing else, you will have piece of mind it is clean and a good start to a long ownership that it trouble free.
