Lift pump questions
Lift pump questions
My 04.5 with 66k miles still has the lift pump on the fuel filter. Is there a recall to move this pump or is it just a TSB? If I take it to a dealer, will they charge me to move it? Where do they move it to? Do they install a new pump or just relocate the old one? If this pump is going out, will it cause the truck to feel sluggish or will it just fall on its face? Sorry for all the questions at once. Thanks for any input.

If it is still working I can't say if they will charge you or not, but I'd guess they will. When it quits, it quits, and you stop right there. No warning. But you might be able to restart it a couple more times and move it a bit. I was able to just barely get home with a lot of cranking and about 10 re-starts, but that was it, tow time. The dealer did mine under warrantee at around 67,000 miles I think. Then I immediately did the research and got one of the first Walbro kits.
If you do get the dealer fix it will be the in-tank setup. That's OK but I like the external pump like the Walbro because it can be easily replaced if needed and once you get the in-tank setup you might have trouble switching later to a good pickup tube.
If you are going to stay stock and don't mind spending a few bux at the dealer, get the in-tank setup. If you can convince them that yours has failed, you could get a warrantee fix in-tank setup. If you want the best thing or plan to bomb it, get something else and put it in now before you meet the tow truck guy in the middle of the night while you're on vacation. It's VERY likely yours will fail.

A failed pump doesn't always leave you stranded. When mine went, my wife took 5 minutes to get out of the intersection. After calling me she drove 5 miles before it quit again. I picked it up with a tow buddy a few hours later and drove it 25 miles no problem then drove back to the dealer another 30 the next day with no problem. Who knows????
FWIW the CP3 is supposed to pull through the lift pump.
