vin Numbers

How does the Vin Number from the 04 designation to the 0.4.5 differ?? or does it. is there a way to tell them apart by looking just at the vin number? or by looking at the truck up close and persona.

Check the 8th digit of the vin. A 6 is the SO, a C is the HO. If it has the Cummins, and there's something different there, it could be a 600. (Hemi has a D I believe) I'm guessing they'll change the 8th digit for the 600, but I could be wrong.

12Pack is right about the SO and HO 8th digit being different. But there isn't a way to tell between the HO 555 and HO 600. The only way to tell by the VIN is to know where in the build sequence (the last 6 digits) they changed the HO engine. My truck isn't here yet but supposedly it has the 600 engine and the last 6 are just a few numbers over 189700.

I was surprised that the order code for the 600 engine was the same as the 555....."ETH".

One of the DiRT moderators, who works for Edmunds, said there was some confusion on if the HO would still be offered, even though the 600 was 50 state legal. A link posted here ~ a week ago said both would be offered. (I think it was TX paper article)

Using the ETH for the 600 shoots holes in that theory. As far as you know, a C will signify the 600? I might be near a dealer this afternoon. I'll pull in and check some CTD vin's. The HO isn't offered in MA, so if I see any C's........we got em.

Ok-- thanks for the come backs, BUT, i know the engine spot, it would be the number --10--spot, on researching the dealer inventories, with vin #'s attached 04's are 54 in the 9 & 10 spots of which ten is the year of said vehicle. how would the half year be noted????? any ideas---------

My 3500 just arrived. My gallery shows the Cummins manufacture label. It's on the driver side of the valve cover. The rated HP is on the label. I was hoping for the 600 just by luck, but mine says '305hp at 2900rpm'

I stopped by. 3 CTD's on the lot out of ~ 10 HD's and all had the SO (6 in the 8th vin spot). I don't want another dark color, but that maroon is sweet.

I guess MA is a little to far from Mexico to have the 600's already.

The intercooler is supposed to have plastic end bells and the fan shroud should be mounted to the engine, not the body.

The fan shroud should be the easiest thing to identify the "600".
