Two Cycle Engine Oil Eh?

I see that people use 2 cycle engine oil in their fuel to add lubricity to it. Sounds like it would work........... but I'd be concerned if there was any detergent in that type of oil. Does anybody know if there is ???

I'm guilty of running 2-stroke oil in mine on ocassion. I can't answer the part about detergents, but I always looked to see that it was ashless.

I run two stroke also, mercury premium plus. engine is alot quieter at idle. almost all two cycle oils will be ashless, at least for outboards

Why not just use a good quality fuel additive?

I would have to agree with Luke S. Power service and others seem to have lubricating additives. It would be hard for me to poor 2 stoke oil in my fuel tank. If 2 stroke oil is so good why doesnt someone market it for diesel engines? Just my 2 cents.

I just don't believe in home brew additives in $30-$50k trucks, maybe I'd poor it in my 300,000 miles first gen, but not a new common rail.

i think 2 stroke oil became popular becuase of the vp 44 failures, i have been using it for years. i have no doubts that it is responsible for my continued good performance of my vp 44....besides that, i have a 2 micron fuel filter before my on frame transfer pumps

I added a quart to my tank today. I know that might be way too much. The brand I used was Pennziol "multi-purpose 2-cycle premium engine oil". It's certified TC-W3. Oh, and more importantly, on the back of the bottle it reads, "helps keep spark plugs and exhaust ports clean".

I didn't notice anymore smoke. But again, the motor is quiet. I'll keep adding iol to the tank.

With PS pushing $15 a bottle now I'm using TCW3 a lot more. Alternating between the two.

My first impression is to agree Luke. However, myself and a lot of people have used MMO for many years. What's in that stuff?? It's a mystery! Could be it's 2 cycle oil? (I'm cautious as well, but there are a lot of people who do use 2 cycle, and it is made to burn.) Personally I stick to the big sellers, like MMO & Power Service. I've used Howes, and Howes Meaner Cleaner. I wouldn't hesitate to use Lucas, and used to use Stanadyne, but it's expensive stuff. I won't use 2 cycle, because I have had good luck with the others, and like you maybe I'm cautious.

I'll stick with my PS and MMO for now. I'm sure the 2 stroke will not harm anything due to how much it is actually diluted, but would rather wait untill there is some actuall testing and the bottle says "can be used in Diesel fuel" or DC/Cummins says it is OK to use. I guess I'm kind of a chicken **** when it comes to my $35K truck.
