Which tire for best MPG??

My stock Michelins after 85,000 miles have served me well and are showing their age and need to go. I would like the Toyo 285/75/17 E rated. With the much larger diameter tires of Toyo's over the ugly stock Michelins can I expect better MPG???. I need E rated tires. Cripes, with the cost of fuel now, I may go back to the ugly stock Michelin unless someone would say that I could get better MPG with the larger diameter tire. Thanks in advance!

i'm getting mid 18 with mine on 285's hand calculated. also some tires are "d rated" but have the same weight capacity as an "e rated" tire. the stock michelins are rated at 3195 lbs. single and are e rated, the bfg's are d rated and also have 3195 weight capacity. so far i've had no vibration problems and the increased off road traction is greatly appreciated.......i should be getting my quad mileage module on friday, pm me next week and i'll let you know if there is an increase, my driving habits are very conservative...

It will be very hard to beat the mpg of the stock Michelins properly aired up. You can go to 285s and not loose much, but I would expect to loose a little with even that small size increase with city driving. Bigger, heavier, wider means more rolling resistance, especially from stop. Any gains from lower rpms is lost because of it. Just my .02.

Of course the first thing I did was drive straight to a 4wheelparts and have my 265 BFG Rugged Trails removed and replaced with BFG 315s and leveling kit.

Have since dropped back down to BFG 285s and am happy with the compromise at this point.

Not to hijack the thread but I am in a similar situation. I still have lots of life left in my stock 265's but really want to go to the 285's. I do atleast 80% highway driving and was wondering if I would see a gain in milage?

I see the point of in town driving and bigger tires but since mine is mostly highway I would "guess" to say it would get better mileage.

My experience with the bigger tires was the highway mileage stayed about the same as smaller tires and lost a little city driving. Of course a lot is the individual driving style, but I would not expect any signficant mileage improvement even with mostly highway.

Hey I Got A New Take Off Set Of Those Michelins,if Your Looking To Replace .cheap.replaced Mine With 305 Nitto's,if Ya Recalibrate The Speedo, they Probably Will Help At Higher Cruising Speed Lower Rpm, But It May Take 95% Hwy For It To Really Show.

If you have a 06 with a G56 or have 410 axles, then larger tires will definitely get you better mileage for the same driving style. I gained close to 3 mpg fully corrected with summer tread 315s (not the more aggressive KOs).

Automatics and later G56 trucks have a better drive ratio out of the factory and you probably won't see any difference, maybe even a drop... unless you have 410s.

Dodge says they will not cover axle bearing or suspension warrantee claims if you drive in with anything larger than 285s.

Thanks. As long as I do not loose any I am happy. I just need a slightly bigger tire The 265's just look too small IMO

when i went to my bfg 315s i didnt lose much in the mpg dept. i mean it dropped slightly but with the 4.10s in the rear it brough the rpms down too at highway speeds, so it helps on long trips and such. around town it blows, but hey- it looks good lol.

.

That's what I was going to say. Those Michelins are whimpy looking and don't do well in the snow (after 30,000 miles or so of wear) but they sure return great MPGs at max PSI.

Just to clarify guys, going to 285s or larger means you are increasing your width, thus increasing your rolling resistance (265, 285, 305 are all widths, not sidewall heights, the sidewall is the second number and a percentage of the width).

Exactly. But most people just identify a tire by the first number which is a direct correlation to height. (% of width)

Well I guess I don't need the extra width if I would lose MPG. Just would like a taller tire that is E rated, at least one that would fit the truck better. Any suggestions?
