If you live in Phoenix, you don't park your truck in
the summer sun after a fill-up.
Good point. I'm sure that's part of the reasoning for not using the full capacity of the tank. thermal expansion..........

Now are we thinking the tank is actually 40 gallons but fits 34 due to the vent issue?
Actually they program the light to come on a good bit before the tank is anywhere near REALLY empty. Same goes for the DTE showing 0 in the overhead. Somewhere in the owner's manual, there is a good explanation of the percentage of tank capacity at each indicator. "Seems" like I remember something about 8% of capacity when the low fuel light goes on but on a 34 gallon tank that's less than 3 gallons, so it's probably more. Don't have time to look it up right now. I drove my '04 100 miles with the low fuel light on and 50 with DTE showing 0.

I don't have a problem with mine filling right into the neck. They must have done something different at the factory because it takes me 30 sec to top it right to having fuel sit in the neck.

I thought this was one mod I have to do for sure, but have taken it off my list.

Me and some buddies just installed my Vent Tank mod too along with the mod for the hoses for the barbed fitting on top of the tank. This thing works great. (so does my new GDP Walbro system).

Anyway, after completing this mod...........I probably only had about 2 gallons of diesel in my tank. I let it run VERY VERY low, knowing I had a 5 gallon can available. When it was completed, I poured in the 5 gallon can and drove about 12 miles or so to a town and filled up my truck. 36 + gallons to fill up. So it must hold close to 40 gallons on my long bed truck!!! I filled the fuel right up the brim.

On a different note......our tanks have two plastic barbed fittings for venting on top of the tank. DC just leaves them wide open!! Crud or sand or whatever can get in them and get into your fuel!!!!!!!!! I highly recommend every body put some fuel hose on the fittings and "T" them together and run a line up above your filler neck. I placed a cheapo fuel filter on it too after I went above the filler neck and looped it and dropped it back down a little.

I have to admit, however, my fuel tank was clean as a whistle with 61k on my truck. I still wonder how something hasn't got in those fittings. But if you don't put some hose on them I would think fuel would run out the top of the tank if you did the Vent tank mod and brought fuel up to the filler neck.

I've read many posts on the supposedly open barbs on the top of the tank and the suggestions about putting hoses on 'em, etc. I've had Dave Kelley's vent kit on my '04 for years. I have never had any problems with junk getting into the tank nor have I ever seen anything come out of those barbs. If they are open, I'd think that when I fill my tank until fuel is standing in the neck in the summer and the fuel expands, fuel would be forced out those barbs. That has never happened to me.

Off hand, do you happen to remember what size the hose was for the two little barbs? I just got my fuel tank vent kit from David Kelly, and I wanted to take care of it at the same time...
Im guessing you also used diesel rated hose too right, for the two small vents?

Hey stacked,I did mine. The hose is 1/4" I.D. with a tee fitting about 6-7' total and an inline fuel filter. The filter is 5/16" but I heated up my 1/4" hose and slipped it right on. You can do a search on here, its refered to as the roll over vent mod.Oh I used 1/4" fuel line

Stacked, here is another thread about it that I used for gathering parts etc. Pet did a write up with some pics. But since I did the Vent Tank Mod too, I ran the fuel hose up to the filler neck, looped it, tied it up...and pointed the hose with the filter back down. (instead of running it into the frame rail like he suggested)

I ran 1/4'' from the barbed fittings.....into a T...and then ran 5/16'' from the T up to the filler neck/filter.

I do!! I have driven about 6000 miles or so since I did it. It sure is nice to go like almost 400 miles now before my tank even hits the half way mark on the fuel gauge!!! Really helps lengthen that cruising range. And now every time I fill up, I know I am adding the exact amount back in that I burned since I can see the fuel in the filler neck.

Just installed one on my '07 Friday. Took a little over an hour. It had about 2 gallons in it and I put in 37 gallons to fill it up. It still took a couple clicks at the pump to get the foam settled, but it filled all the way into the neck and stayed there. Call me happy!
