Synthetic - too soon or not?
Hi guys,
My truck has a little over 10000 miles on it now. I have not towed yet (yeah I know, lame) and its been mostly highway miles with some back roads and stop and go when I travel at the wrong times. I am looking to give it its first oil change , right between the schedule A and the schedule B maintenance schedules of 7500 and 15000 miles. Is it too early to go for the synthetic? specifically the Rotella T 5W-40. I wanted to use synthetic through the winter here in Southeast PA. Thanks.

Personally, with no towing, I think I'd go dino for now, and switch at the next change if you like.
I would think it unlikely to hurt anything to switch now, even if the rings aren't fully seated, but I know it wouldn't hurt anything to run dino for a while longer- since these motors are known to go may hundreds of thousands of miles on dino...
Just my non-expert .02.

I agree. Do some good towing to really let that motor "stretch its legs."
BUT
My parents 02 d-max was switched over to Amsoil at the very first oil change and we've got 150,000 on it now with NO problems.
So I guess its really up to you.
Flip a coin!!

carwash,
Being you want to use Rotella 5w40 you should not have any problems being its a group 3 synthetic oil. BTW, I used Rotella 5w40 in mine for winter use at 10,300. It would be a good idea to get some hard working miles on it to make sure the rings get seated.

If you are swapping over the Rotella 5w40 I would see no problems. If you were switching over to Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Amsoil or any other full synthetic I would wait until 30,000 miles because it will take forever to break in just running around. Hook up to something heavy and work that truck. You won't believe the difference it can make.
I run my truck like yours no towing. The sooner the better imo I wish I had done it on the first change. It will be 15w40 amsoil full synthetic on the next change at 15k miles. I don't buy into the old fashioned ring seating, break-in argument. Too many new engines come filled with synthetics.
Things may have changed, but in the owners manual for my 2002, it specifically says not to use synthetic until 30,000 miles, and 10,000 of that have to be hard pulling.
Maybe check the manual.

Says 15,000 to 20,000 depending on how you use the engine in my manual which leads me to believe it doesn't really matter since yours says 30,000 and we have the same engine. It's like biofuel they used say b5 was ok but now Cummins and Cat have upped that to b30. Oil is a personal thing just do whatever makes you happy.
