stock wheel finish question on my 03

On my 03 I have the aluminum rims. They are not the polished/machined finish. They look painted...are they? You can see the wheels I have in my gallery.

If they are painted...could I strip the paint and polish them myself? I have done this before on a few sets of motorcycle wheels. I'm just not sure about the stock finish. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Nick

Had a 2000 for a couple of years. No longer though. Wife didn't like the passenger accomodations.

wife...bah! I bought another bike to accomodate my wife. The RC is my toy. Now if your wife is the Texas girl in your avatar I might have to reconsider.

If I'm not mistaken, your wheels should be aluminum that have clear coat over them for protection. There should not be any paint on them what so ever. You could strip the clear coat off and polish them but I think that would be a royal pain

Now see.... I did just that. I bought a 97 YZF1000R for a second bike for us to tule around on. She loved that bike, but I got sick of maintaining both bikes and bought a ZX-12R. LOVED that bike and she liked it too, but not like the YZF. That was a good bike. Anyway, ended up taking up road racing and that was about the last I needed of the 12R. So I went and bought myself a FZ-1.... and it turns out to be a great bike for what I need it to do (and it's also cheap which makes the racing budget a little bigger).

Loved the RC51 though... I was big deal back in 00 when I bought it. But not so much the next year. Still have fond memories... but that thing got me into some serious trouble. You weren't having fun on that bike unless you were breaking the law... but it was fun!

Sorry for going off topic so bad. Getting back on topic. Have you thought of using aircraft paint stripper on them to take of the clear and paint (if there is some). Would be very similar to polishing the lips on a motorcycle wheel I would assume. Wonder if you could pick up a junk wheel in a junk yard and find out what it would entail before you touch your stockers.

Just a thought...

Oh, and BTW... that is Elisha Cuthbert. In best Homer Simpson Voice Mmmmmm... Elisha Cuthbert Drool

I know what you mean...I've polished rims before. Not a fun job. Thanks.

I've gone through a few bikes too...Triumph Daytona, a previous RC51, CBR600 F4, CBR1100XX, 1800 Goldwing...currently have the new RC51/VTX1800 combo. The wife hates the VTX (too loud and vibrates too much....she got too used to the Goldwing) so we ordered an 06 Yamaha FJR1300...she likes it much better...it should be here in July.

I'd definitely have to pick up a rim at a junkyard first...don't want to ruin one of my good ones. I was going to use the aircraft paint stripper and see what happens.

Nice... a Honda fan obviously. Yeah, those Goldwings are pretty nice. My father just bought an 02 with 1400 miles on it. He's 62 and still cranking the miles on it. Awesome power for such a big bike and they handle well too. You'll really like the FJ. One of my soon to be cousins has that bike and it is a great all arounder.... especially if you are looking for a two up machine. That was the bike I was going to get, but I wanted something with a little more corner carving capability and cheaper if I was going to have one street bike.

Good luck with your wheel stripping.

Yeah...I like Hondas. I'm not biased though. If I find something else I will buy it. It's just that I used to work at the dealeaship I buy Hondas from. All I have to do is walk in and I get a price that's into their holdback...so I can't resist.

Honestly the Goldwing that we had was the best bike that I've ever ridden. I know it may sound strange but it is. The power and handling for such a huge beast was awesome. I surprised many a sportbike with what I could do on it...even with my wife on the back. Best thing is that it can keep up with some sportbikes while having a CD player, intercom, CB, caverns of storage space, week-long comfort, and my sleeping wife on the back.

I can't wait for the FJR to get here...my good friend has an 05 model...we bought an 06 with all the improvements...he is jealous.
