Which steering gear to get??
Which steering gear to get??
Time to replace my steering gear, which one should I get?? I wish PSC made a direct replacement gear box but i couldn't find one so I'm looking at one from Dodgeparts.com ($275) or a remanufactured one from local Redhead Steering Gears ($265).
Considering the price is basically the same I'm wondering if the one from dodeparts is new if its better than a reman. The reman gear actually sounds really good, i guess they rebore the housing and put in needle/oversize bearings, and put the sector shaft on a lathe. Thoughts??

I heard PSC makes a recirculating ball gear box for ford trucks but the sector shaft is a bigger diameter and the mount holes on the frame don't match? I just put on the new steering linkage + pitman arm so i don't really want to have to modify anything to make it work...
I bought a Redhead gear earlier this month and put it in. I had sector shaft play and started to get a clunk when I turned the wheel towards the right. The guys at Redhead told me that they ream out everything in the box and put oversize bearings in and make sure everything's spec'd right. They also said there's a lot of problems that occur with these boxes because they're not machined right at the factory.
I'm pretty happy with the box so far. Nice, tight, quiet steering. The guy there was honest-he told me that any lift will reduce lifespan of the box, but my PSC brace will help out a lot. I figured that for a couple bucks more, I'd pay to have a box that was gone through (Redhead) versus just a reman.
Just my two cents worth-

I spoke with the people at Red head today. I have to say they were very helpful. I explained the issues I was having and the guy told me how to check my steering box before I spent the $$$ on one that I may not need.
Now for me that is customer service. I checked it this evening and think I may wait a while but when it is time I have no doubt as to where I will be buying from.

I'm on my 3rd steering box from Dodge, and I don't even have 30,000 miles on my truck yet. I think I'd stay away from the factory boxes (I had my original "new" one and they've since put in two remanufactured boxes under extended warranty).
For whatever it's worth. And I don't abuse my truck either. Just the opposite. I baby it.
