Is this a smart buy?

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum but have been around cummins trucks, diesel equipment awhile. I found an 04.5 quad cab automatic w/ 99800 miles about an hour away from me. The Carfax lists a transmission overhaul at 78000 miles. When all this snow that just dumped on us here in the northeast clears up i'm goin to test drive it. They're asking $18,000, does that sound reasonable? I know that 100,000 miles isn't much for a diesel, but it still leaves me a little nervous, is there anything in particular I should look for when I test drive?

Go to Edmund's at http://www.edmunds.com/tmv/used/index.html and click on the Dodge link, chose body style and put in the info to get an good idea of whats its worth. Example, 2004 4x4 SLT SB QC with auto trans is worth about $16,300 Private Party price, there's a $909.00 deduction for high mileage.

Thanks for the input, I did the edmunds calculator, and w/ the options added, it brought the dealer price to a little over $19500. The diesel option alone added $5446. KBB says $21,000. So I guess i'm starting out ahead of the game. Won't know till I give it a drive and go over it w/ a fine tooth comb haha, hopefully tomorrow.

Chill,

I would never pay dealer list price as shown on KBB they live in fantasy land. FYI, the dealer got the truck for the base trade in price listed on Edmund's, I guess $12,000.00 at the action and then marks it up to retail with all of the options.

I have to deff. agree with that. Some of these dealerships are just straight up jokes asking crazy amounts of money for a vehicle you know they didnt pay squat for. Ya they are a business and they got to pay the bill too it just has to be reasonable. Like a place i know my cousin traded his 2000 cummins for a new at the time 05 cummins they gave him 11k for the 2000 and i went in to see how much they wanted and they said they want 20k firm. Also saying they did work on the tranny and they got more in it then that and it is a steal!!!! just look at kbb!!! what a joke.

I bought my 2004.5 about 15 months ago

for about $19,000. It's a 4x4 quad cab and it had 54,000 miles on it. The previous owner had put mickey thompson bajas on it and it had 3 autometer gauges (not even hooked up) on the A pillar. He had a nice sound system in it and a sprayed in bedliner and a 4" exhaust.

All of that was a blessing to me, BUT it could have meant that he had put a chip in it and abused it (in fact, the rubber plug was removed on the port on the engine so he probably did have a programmer on it). With any used car, you could end up buying someone elses problem.... but in my experience if you give it a good look over, and you like what you see, go for it.

Ultimately, I had injector failure at 74k miles... but dodge replaced all of the injectors under warranty and it didn't cost me a penny.

These are good trucks with strong engines. 100k miles is nothing, but i'd still offer them $16k and see if they bite. You might also want to have the transmission serviced (change the fluid and filter), have the injectors checked, and replace the lift pump (if it's one of the canister models) because right around 100k miles those things start to fail.

Well, I went and drove the truck friday. Mechanically everything was ok, and it drove nice, but there were a few nicks in the paint, and a whole in the driver seat. I didn't buy it because it was obvious the salesman and sales manager didn't really know anything about the truck, and they thought they could pull a fast one on me w/ the financing. Apparently they thought I wouldn't see past the "low monthly payment" to the 25% interest they were trying to slip by me! There are enough CTD trucks out there, no reason to deal w/ jokers like that.

25% Interest! I’d run, not walk from that dealer. Unless your credit is in the dumpster you can do much better than that!

I'm late on this too... but I'll share I guess.

I picked up my '05 2wd CTD LWB almost a year ago now with 200k on it. I had been looking for a few months but wasn't in any hurry and really wasn't too picky. Dodge went and publicly declared bankruptcy and everything hit the fan. I used that to my advantage (along with the high mileage ) and picked up mine for only $7,500 out the door (including EVERYTHING).

Now my truck isn't a looker (all white nothing fancy), but it's got everything that's important to have in a truck: Cummins diesel engine, long bed, B&W hide away goose-neck hitch, electric locks & windows, ect. Pretty basic.

It's no ones' business where my money goes; and I don't give a fella a clue by looking at my truck!
