Rear projection lights

I want to install a set of flood lights under my rear bumber on a switch in my cab that I can turn on/off with one flick. Let me get this straight, I don't want to hook them up to my reverse lights.

I've bought some brackets for under the bumber, now I just need some lights. What I'm looking for is some good suggestions on lights, I don't know much about candle watt power or bulbs so I could use some help.

I want to use these lights to annoy drivers on my rear and to help see better at night when backing up, but again I don't want them wired to my reverse light.

Napa sells trucklites. I have them mounted on the tool box of my 99 and use them for the same thing. They come with a hard plastic case(probably not plastic but should get the idea).

I want to commit a crime and I'm going to post it in a public forum. Way to go. In most states it is illegal to use white lights to "annoy" tailgaters. They can disorient and cause an accident, likely resulting in you being charged with a crime.

I'm using some low profile Warn 35 watt ATV floodlights bolted to the Defiant brackets. I chose the lights because they are about 2"x4.5", so they tuck under the bumper nicely. They were $50 or so for the pair. I hooked them up to the 7 pin harness reverse light wire. Since I have a hard tonneau cover I don't use my cargo light. If I get bored one day I might wire up the cargo light switch to activate a relay feeding those lights. For now I just shift the truck into reverse with the ignition off and the parking brake on if I need to keep them lit for long term.

These lights work well for backing up,they have a durable rubber housing and replaceable bulbs, you can get them from Napa and probrable a lot of other places, including the nearest truck stop.

All my tow trucks have these on them. I also put 4 of them on my Kubota for plowing or working at night. They are very bright, you can also buy just a replacement bulb for 3-4 bucks. They have been the best light for the money that we have used.

Cheap fog lights...

I used (on previous trucks) just a cheap set of fog lights from a big box store. I think they were $19.99 for the pair, and I liked the "low profile" that didn't hang down waiting to get torn off on the first thing I ran over.

I quickly learned that cheap fog lights will leak water into them (especially mounted upside down under the bumper), and that will effectively ruin them within a few weeks.

I got a set of KC fog lights as a replacement. Those also leaked water, but what many people don't realize is that KC offers a lifetime warranty (maybe it's only 23 years) on their lights. I got new reflectors every time I sent my rusty, pitted out old reflectors in. Still a hassle to replace, but money better spent.

For the record, I wanted the extra light to see when backing up or loading trailers...not blinding stupid drivers that were too close to my bumper.

I don't want to commit a crime and never stated that. I'm a law enforcement officer and would never state on a public forum that I was willing or encouraging crimes. BTW, it is not a "crime" to flash lights at drivers when they are following too close or driving with brights on, but it is a traffic violation to follow too close and tailgate. Thanks for the response.

Tapping your brakes to illuminate the red brake lights may be ok, but a white light is not in most states. This is the law in AZ:

28-940. Additional lighting equipment

A motor vehicle may be equipped with any of the following:

3. Not more than two backup lamps either separately or in combination with other lamps, but a backup lamp shall not be lighted when the motor vehicle is in forward motion.

Here in AZ your action would be criminal.

I've been stopped for not having covers on the rear fog lights on my Bronco. The only thing that prevented a repair ticket was that I could demonstrate that they were wired to the reverse lights. They have a switch too for offroad/camping use, but the officer didn't need to know that

This is the Pro Comp Pair pack. sells for under $40 bucks with the wiring harness. you will need extra wire to run all the way to the back.

4x6 lights i think, 55watt bulbs. plenty bright for what your planning. I put them in to help backing up to trailers at night with my window tint. used them about 5 times for tailgaters, or folks that drive up on me with there brights on. but i just reach down and bump the gear shift in the reverse location to flash them a couple time.

I have mine wired into a relay to my 7 pin trailer light plug utilizing my reverse lights. the lights have been cleaned and straightened since this pic.

My lights went out a month or so back (bad fuse) and I was lost with out these. they are A++ in my book.
