Rear bumper and exhaust soot

Anyone notice how the exhaust soot damages the right corner of the rear bumper?

The chrome on mine is heavily pitted and flaking off along the lower edge where the exhaust soot tends to collect the heaviest.

I usually clean it off every other month or so and have noted the pitting/flaking getting worse over time.

The secret is to keep it washed more frequently than once a month. I've monitored this myself and washing every 2wks works better. Also polish and protect the area, maybe a light coat of wax to keep the soot from compromising the chrome. Once the chrome becomes pitted you'll need to stop the rust.

On a set of handle bars on my old motorcycle underneath one of the grips I had some pitting. I used some Naval Jelly directly on the rust. I can't remember how else I fixed the pitting but it came out pretty good (to stop the rust). Of course the fix is black.

Another option is the prep and paint the entire bumper. Or you could go for nice heavy duty replacement.

Unfortunately, I'm a little late on stopping the pitting and subsequent small rust pocks.
I'll have to see about powder coating and depending upon cost, may go the route of a "nice heavy duty replacement".

I do like that turn down exhaust tip to keep the diesel deposits off the corner of the bumper.

Similar to what verdesardog did, when my 5" turbo back exhaust was installed I had them add a 45 degree tip. I get some soot on my mud flap but that's about it.

I had a lot of discoloration on my bumper and I simply pulled my exhaust tip out a couple inches and it totally went away. The tip was too far in anyways...

After having a winch fail on my '99,I started using ratchet straps to secure my spare. The 3rds have holes in the inside of the frame rails. Works killer. Sorry for the partial hijack.
