Power steering gearbox replaced, now air
Power steering gearbox replaced, now air
burps out each time I take the fill cap off to check the level. Dealer says it will eventually quit, it is just bleeding air out of the line. Also says there is a vent in the cap. I can't find a way for it to vent on it's own. Anyone have info on this? Also steering wheel was not horizontal or in proper orientation when I got it back last week. I took it back today and they did a front end alignment. Still not exactly straight. Said that was the best they could do. Only way to change it any more was to change toe in and make it a little out of alignment. I told them not to do that, didn't want to wear out the tires.
Get the service manual and follow directions exactly. On the old cars I used to do, this was to put the front end in the air, and have helper turn s-wheel s-l-o-w-l-y from lock-to-lock a few times. Check fluid level before and after (too much ain't good either). Check that return (low-pressure) hose is not kinked or bent or too long.
If they followed the proper procedure for re-filling the system after replacing the gearbox most of the air bubbles should already be gone. Still the fluid reservoir can become pressurized under normal operation which is what the vent cap if for. Problem is the vent caps don't seem to work worth a ****. Heard some theorys that too much pressure build up was causing fluid leaks and my cap would always pop off so i modified the vent to work better.
Carefully pry the gray part with dip stick out of the black cap. You will see a rubber check valve sitting down in the stem of the gray piece. If you look where that rubber piece goes inside the black cap you will see a circular raised plastic area. If you grind this down with a dremel or something then that rubber stopper can actually move up enough to vent. Then clean out the little vent channel that goes from the center to the outside edge of the gray piece and snap it back into the black cap.
I would get a gear box brace like the DSS if I had a new gear box and wanted it to last....

O.K. I took the cap off
disassembled it. Are you referring to the circle of plastic around the rubber valve or the two small half circles with channels. Looks like if they were removed, the rubber would press up against the flat cap and not vent at all. I also crawled under and it looks like I should be able to loosen two bolts on an adjuster that attaches to the arm from the ps unit and adjust the steering wheel as far as proper alignment. It appears to be one of those adjustments that are opposite threaded and will lengthen or shorten the shaft.
jack the truck up in the air front only and turn the wheels back and forth full lock once each way. check fluid if foamy let sit and then fill it up after foam is gone you can scrape the foam out with a screwdriver or a turkey baster keep doing it until it is satisfactory and you have no air. thats how i did it on my 90 same set up
its the two half circles on the black cap, if you grind them down then that rubber piece can lift up when under pressure easier to vent. I've also seem some folks that frilled out the cap with a bigger hole and attatched a vent tube out of it.
