Well, let's answer a question with a question. How about a happy medium? Why not use a blend? A little more cost than a conventional oil, but almost half the cost of a full synthetic. Some say the virtues of synthetic, extreme temperature performance, can be had by simply using a blend of it, and that most motors oils definition is the additive package they're using. Without an additive package, no matter what the basestock is, the lubricating qualities of any oil would be minuscule. And no matter what oil is used, the by-products of combustion are going to be the determining factor as to the oil's useful service life.
I'm not an oil profiteer, just simply a Cummins owner, looking for the best value. Beware of marketing propaganda!

Everyone has an opinion and most are based on God knows what.
There was a blind test done at TDR and an independent expert rated all the then current oils based on additive packages and whatnot. If you believe him, Valvoline Synthetic Blue is the best. Amsoil comes in quite low.
If you want to listen to Blackstone like I do, they say almost any oil out there is just fine if you change it every now and then. Even the $10 a gallon or $6 a gallon like I was running gave me excellent oil analysis reports. Why spend $28 a gallon and throw it away when you can spend $6 a gallon and get the same oil reports?
If you want to run extended change intervals you may want a better additive package and filter set up. But the cost for your 7,000 mile analysis and quart of replacement oil will be more than my oil costs for a full change.
I'm going to run Valvoline Syn Blue after I get this Rotella 5W syn out in the spring. If I didn't run that, I would run any CI+4 instead of the best CJ oil....

Good luck finding any CI-4+ anymore. I was going to switch to John Deere due to this....and now even it has changed to CJ blend.
I've decided, NOW, to just stick with regular Rotella 15w40 and add a small amount of ZDDP additive to the oil.

Same here, not sure where everyone is getting their info. I have run the Valvolene PB with analysis that come back JUST FINE. I am running the John Deere now as all the places around here are still CI4. No Cj hitting the shelves yet. But I have no problems with the VPB CJ
