I am looking at two diesels, 2003 dually manual 305 made in 11/02, no 4x4. other is 2004 dually manual no 4x4 2003 in around $17500 with 160k miles. the 2004 $18500 with 145k miless
Which one has the 47re or 48 re tranny? and which tranny is more reliable..? Where in the motor would I find out which truck has which tranny? I want the one with the 305 motor, I read its more reliable.?????

Should I look for one that has a Cat on, or not. Pros and con??????

Thanks Newby

others will chime in here i'm sure, but pretty sure they both have the 48re, 2002 was the last year of the 47re (i could be mistaken, but i had a 2002 and i recall the dealer saying they changed the tranny in 2003.

When I mention about the 48re, is that talking about automatics only?

Sounds like the 03 has the HO engine, so they should both have the 48RE in them. I think either engine will put a smile on your face.

not all of the 2003 have a 48re. My father has a early 03 that has a 47re

03 with a HO 305 should have the 48RE. Look on the valve cover(drivers side), it should tell you HP/torque.

ZARRTX, You said manual, as in manual trans right. 47RE and 48RE are automatics. Manual trans, 5sp is a NV4500, all though I don't know if they're offered as late as 03, and 6sp will be the NV5600.

Thanks Grit, you answered my question. Hope the NV56oo is a good tranny. I am pretty close to buying the truck. Thanks to everyone for there input, will continue asking and learning more about Diesels.
