Need a little help please...

I posted a thead a couple of days ago about changing my oil but I am just now getting around to it. I have all the oil drained no problem but now for the hard part. I can see the oil filter and I have read where I am supposed to put a bag over it to keep the oil from going all over the place but the filter is way up high on the side of the motor! How in the Sam hill am I supposed to get to it? It looks like the wiring for the a/c unit is in the way a little bit and I am a big guy with big hands and I don't know how I am going to get my wrench on it let alone the bag. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Sam

Get a step ladder and get at it from the top. The bag thing is a good idea, but not necessary. Just move the drip pan under it and unscrew it. There is not alot of oil that comes out. Make sure you refill the engine with oil!

Yes, always. That way oil don't drip on your head.

Well I got it done. I could not see how to do it from the top without removing the air filter box and arm that is attached to it so I just did it from underneath. I only spilled a little which I cleaned up so it turned out great. And to quote my good friend Larry;

GETER DONE!!!!!

I've always done mine from underneath with a long extension, and rarely spill a drop....

It must be different because I did not see a way to get a wrench on it from the top. Even if I had moved the air box and arm it did not look like it was going to be easy. I just used a standard oil wrench and worked it up and onto the filter letting the handle stick out the inner finder and got it that way. I spilled maybe a 1/4 cup. Not to bad now that I know how to do it. Thanks for everyone's help.

Congrats on getting the job done. It will be mucho easier next time if you get a band type filter wrench and a long extension. KD makes a good quality filter wrench. Just stick the band wrench on the extension, stick it up & on the filter body and ratchet away. The only "hard" part is putting the band on so it tightens when you ratchet the handle.

Fuel filter changes are actually easier. All done from the top side.

BTW, you ARE using Fleetguard Statopore filters aren't you. Please don't say you are using Frams!!! Also, don't buy your filters at the dealer. Mopar filters are repackaged Fleetguards marked up 3X. Any Cummins shop will be glad to sell you oil and fuel filters.

I use Fleetguard strapores part # LF16035.
It has flat spots on the bottom like a nut.
Bought a $3 filter wrench that fits the bottom and use a 3/8 ratchet and 10"
extension from bottom with no problem.
Actually use it to "cinch" down new filter a little so it won't accidently come loose.

i remove my inlet hose and top of my air box when i do my oil changes. This way it forces me to look at the airfilter and check the inlet vanes on the turbo. Also i am pretty lazy so holding my arms above myhead while unscrewing the filter is alittle to much for me to do. I am glad to see you got it done, and make sure you go to the Cummins dealer for your filter and oil. They seem to sell filters for about $5, and the oil around $11 a gallon. Cheers

Guess Canadian prices are different than stateside. The Cummins shops here sell the Stratopore filters for around $9. Dino oil of various name brands can be bought for under $7 a gallon.
