Michelins getting replaced, what to get?

Howdy!

I took my truck to Discount Tire in Flower Mound and Michelin told them to give me four new tires due to the cracking that lots of people here have seen. My question is what to get? Right now, I'm due to get the same tires, 265-70-17 E rated LTX A/S. I'd rather go up to a 285, but there's not much choice if I want to keep the E rating. 99.99% of my driving is highway, so I really don't want to get a noisy or fast wearing tire. I don't see that I can get anything in an E rating besides this tire. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tad

As covered in another thread, the D-rated 285 BFG has the same weight rating as your stock tires.

What about lifespan or noise?

Lifespan shoud be very near the same. You will not notice a noise difference in the BFG's, at least no increase that you'll be able to hear over the roar of the motor. I run BFG 35's and have no problem talking in the cab of my 2ng gen at highway speed.

I have the 285's on my truck and the ride is great and no noise at all! Love the way they look also! Yeah they have the same load range as the factory's do!

And a D rated tire is not the correct tire to put on your truck! You cannot get it inspected with lower rated tires and the D tire does not have the strength in the sidewalls and tread of an E rated tire. There is much more to a tire than ABC's! Most guys who do run the D's have seen less mileage and more tire squirm than with an E. A professional tire shop wouldn't even put D's on your truck.

Load range (like E) is different than load index (like 120), which is why they are different ratings. You can choose to ignore one or other, many do, but that doesn't change the fact thay're different ratings. Load index corresponds to maximum load for the tire at some maximum tire pressure.

I think that Pirelli has a 17in load range E, the Toyo Open Country and their highway is, Cooper has a winter tire in load range E and I think that some of their other ones are, and Goodyear has a Silent Armor in load range E. I'm using the Goodyear, which has been an excellent tire so far. I spend most of the time on road, wanted something that would handle wet grass covered parking lots that had a bit of mud, some sand at the beach, gravel roads in the woods, and is severe snow rated. If it lasts as advertised, it has a 50k wear warranty, I'll get another set.

I'm running the tires in my signature. Quietest, best handling tire I've ever run,and I've run them all. If you can wait awhile Toyo's coming out with a 285-75-17 load range "E" tire that'll be 33.8" tall, good compromise tire. My BFG's on my old '99 took mucho lead to balance; 9ozs. on one of them. The Toyos balance up with minimal weight.
