Maybe gettin rid of the 1st gen
Hey guys,
Well, after some serious deliberation, I may have to get rid of the 1st gen. I got a really good deal on a 10'9 Bigfoot Camper but I have soon realized that it is way too heavy for my truck. Even with Air Bags the springs are almost flat. The camper weighs nearly 4800lbs fully loaded. I took myself to the weigh scales yesterday and I weighed in at 4900 kg (10780 lbs). Needless to say I was grossly overweight and I am pretty sure I am exceeding my rear GACV by nearly 1000lbs. It also did not feel very safe driving it, very unstable. So, I am going to look at a 2004 Dodge Dually, 6 speed, with the 325/600 engine....Anything I should look for (problems, etc)... Thanks guys.

4800 lbs is not very much. I don't think that I would worry about it. I have pulled almost three times that much with my pickup..............although that is exceeding the GVWR by a tad . However, a camper is less stable than a stock trailer, but I don't really think that you need a different pickup to pull it.

If you only had a dually you'd probly be ok. I say keep your 1st gen and then get that new dually. Be prepared for sticker shock and high dollar payments. Have you thought about how much you want out of your 1st gen?

The dually would be better suited to that load, but the 1st gen can be made a lot better while carrying a big camper by adding a large diameter rear sway bar and a set of Ranchos set on the stiffest setting. I did it to mine and it really helped. But, of course, if you want a new truck, getting one will be the only cure. I got a new '04 and I've never regretted it.
