Load until the entire truck weight is 9900 lbs and stop.

Pav,
I burn rice coal in my shop and I don't think you can put enough in the bed to overload the truck. I put 2 pallets (2400lbs each)and fill the bed along the side and I'm off the bump stops. I have put over 5000 lbs in the bed and drove a few hundred miles with no trouble.
Good luck,
Topper

The weight limit of your rear axle is written in your door sticker. The weight limit of your tires is written on your tires. Exceed either of those at your own risk.

5000 pounds in the bed is far beyond ridiculously foolish.

Look at the door sticker for GVW or GVWR. GVWR - Truck weight = Bed Payload.

When I got my 06 I got a white booklet 2006 Truck Specifications Guide,so for at least an 06 3500 SRW Quad Cab long 4x4 box payload is 2880 lbs.For a DRW its 4830 lbs. for the auto and 4750 lbs for the G56,Less I guess because its a heavier tranny. And just to see a couple of others for comparison,QCab short box SRW 4x4 3050 lbs for auto,Mega cab 4x4 SRW 2590 lbs for the auto.Mega Cabs are the heaviest configuration,A Qcab DRW LB 4x4 G56 can carry 4750 lbs. but Mega cab DRW SB 4x4 is only 2760 lbs.Same long frame but a bigger cab ,however the curb weight differance between the two does not equal the payload differance.

For me personally, it depends on how far I'm traveling and at what speeds. On the interstate I've been up to about 4500 lbs in the bed and I kept it around 55-60.
Driving short distances, off of main roads, I've had nearly 6000 lbs in the bed and had a 10k lbs on a trailer behind me. I really didn't like that though. At all.

I did a load of dirt and rock with a weight of 4500 lbs according to the scale at the dump. It was a little squishy side to side but handled the load ok otherwise. This was about max for my 2500 SB.
