Looking for a mud tire!!

I am looking for some input on what tire will work in snow and mud and still give a semi smooth road ride. I now have the Michelin stock road tires and they are helpless unless in 4X4 and totally worthless in mud. I was buried to the transfer case and luckily a friend with a Dodge pulled me out and not a Ford or Chevy. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks

Bob

I was actually looking into the Mickey Thompson Baja Claw Radials after I do my suspension lift and get some 16" wheels...a friend of mine runs them on his Duramax and he seems to get in the places he wants to (and sometimes NOT wants to) and gets back out just fine...Derek

Don't go where there is deeper mud. The truck is too heavy. If you had it that deep, tires weren't going to help or you should have stopped spinning them a long time ago. If you can't do it with something like a BFG A/T for mud then you will have to go to a true mud tire and it won't do well in snow/ice.

Just thought that I would give you this link to a review on the Mickey Thompsons...they are a pretty well rounded tire and look vicious to boot...Derek

Thanks guys for the replies. JKitterman, you are absolutely right about not needing to be where I was. Truck backed in just fine. But wouldnt go forward worth a hoot! I quit spinning before any damage was done and accepted the fact that 4x4 will not get you out of every jam and can make them worse. A winch might be a better investment. I will check out the Mickey Thompsons but I am sure they are going to be more aggressive than what I am willing to give up in ride comfort.

You ain't been wheelin until you get stuck. Save your money on a winch and get a good tow strap, stay away from chains. Never go by yourself, always have a buddy & his truck with you.

Don't get any 16" wheels, they won't clear the calipers (some aftermarket 17" don't even fit).

I like my mastercraft courser c/t's. They will dig in the mud, dirt, and grass, and they seem to wear good on the road. Id say they will be what I get next time I buy tires too.

You might want to look into the Cooper Discoverer S/T. They're a great mud/snow tire, have a bit more bite than most of the other "all-terrain" tires in their class, and wear better than a lot of the others. OH, and they look really good on a Dodge too. I have used several different makes of tires in many different applications and I have "run of the mill" choice on what I run (I manage a long-established tire service/trailer repair business). In my personal experience as well as my experience selling thousands of tires to farmers, ranchers, and commercial accounts, this particular tire has proven to be a top performer. It doesn't mean that ALL Cooper tires are that way. It just means that in applications where someone wants an aggressive tire, with a bit more bite than a BFG all-terrain, that's functional as well as looks sharp, and wears really good too, this one is hard to beat. Also, this is the S/T model I'm talking about, not the newer STT that's a full blown mud tire. In my personal experience, I drove my S/T's through a freshly plowed field just a few hours after 4 inches of rain had fallen and I didn't even have to touch the go pedal to "walk" right through. The BFG A/T is also a good choice but they tend to cake up more than the S/T and usually carry a higher price tag $$. As far as the Mickey Thompson Claws, they're built by Cooper as well, but they're primarily a mud tire and consideration should be taken if you plan on running a lot of miles on the road as well. There are others...Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo, Toyo Open Country A/T's...but they're not nearly as aggressive. Hope this helps.

I have the goodyear MTR's and they work great...wear nicely, look good, quite on the road, and a beast off it.
