Knocking felt through Gas Pedal
Knocking felt through Gas Pedal
Hi,
The past few months I've noticed a vibration/knocking which is felt through the gas pedal. It isn't consistent, in fact on cold mornings I don't feel it at all, but in the afternoon when the ambient temperature is higher it is noticeable. In my mind, it's something that contracts due to the cold, but expands slightly when the temperature is higher. It does not seem to have any relationship to the temperature of the vehicle.
Recently replaced most of the front end (ball joints and tie rod ends), so I think they can be ruled out.
I've found similar posts doing google searches, but none are exact and they refer to exhaust system hitting the frame or the actual pedal assembly hitting.
2007 2500 SLT MegaCab
Thanks
Doug

Since the fuel pedal is "fly by wire", I'd be looking for something that is vibrating or lying on the APPS.No mechanical linkage or cables going to the engine. It's all under the the knee bolster.
I just finished replacing the front shocks, after a short test ride it appears that the problem is solved. The shocks seemed to be the only componet that could act differently in different tempurature ranges, so that's what I focused on.
Lost Lake.. Good call. After putting a few more miles on the truck after the shock install it became appearant that they didn't clear up the issue. Took it into the shop today and had the owner take it for a spin with me. He called it before putting it on the lift. It appears that the steering gearbox is the issue. Vibrations/knocking are traveling through the firewall via the steering shaft and that is what I can feel through the pedals.
Can you provide more details on the bracing you put in place for the gearbox. Also looking for recommendations on the replacement gearbox.
Thanks

I had a knocking that I felt through the steering wheel. Turned out to be the intermediate shaft of the string column. Replaced under warranty and no further issues.
It was very annoying.

Gear box price aound $700, much better design. Includes pitman arm since gear is larger diameter. Or you can try adjusting it to take some play out of gear box.

I figured that was the case with your 2007, but wanted to suggest the idea that the intermediate shaft may be the culprit. How it was replaced was not really relevant, I shouldn't have included that part.
Sabersix, no issue on the warranty comment. It is amazing that this issue came to light just a few weeks after the "time" had expired on my extended warranty.
When the diagnostics were done, all the components were disconnected and checked. The shafts and u-joints were all tight. The only play was found in the steering gearbox. When it was pointed out to me and I felt the box as the steering wheel was turned, it was very evident that it was the same tapping I was feeling through the pedals.

Steering gear was updated to a heavier design pitman gear. You can still get reman but I wouldn't recomend that since issue will return sooner or later.
I think that this issue is now closed out. Installed a reman Gear Box from Red-Head and based on this and other threads added a Gear Box stablizer from Custom Diesel Inc.
Feels great going down the road, Steering feels tighter than I can ever recall/
