Interior Lights-need help

Unless I have the ignition turned on my interior lights go out after about 5-10 seconds whatever buttons/switches I press or turn, is this normal?

Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds normal to me...I believe this is to prevent battery drain in case someone accidently left the lights on when the parked it. Just to be safe search through your owners manual and likewise I'm sure someone else will chime in who owns an 06 as well.

My problem is that 5-10 seconds seems really quick.

My interior light turns on and stays on when I hit the lamp. I have left it on overnight and in the morning find the lamp light comming on when I start. I do not know how long before the truck turned it off but the light does stay on for more than a few minutes when turned on manually.

This is a big pain in the A$$. Mine does this too. Open a door to grab some groceries and the lights go out on you. Hit the switch on the dash, same **** thing. Turn on the rear cargo light, yep same thing!!

I found if you hit the brakes, that they come back on, for another 5-10 seconds. I have to have my son sit in the seat and push the brakes for me if I want to try to do anything using the lights. I also notice it affects my door dinger too.

This has to be some malfunction. I mean 5-10 seconds! I will try to re-read my manual and post up if I find anything.

Oh yea, 2006 DWR 3500 4x4, purchased in 4-2006. 3500 miles on it.

You should be able to turn the courtesy lights on manually, and (on mine) they'll automatically turn off in about 15 minutes.

I could be wrong. But I would check your door switches. Does your door open indicator stay on. This sounds like your problem Ramified. I would go back to the dealer. The lights go out when you go over 15 miles an hour as a safety issue. But when you come to a stop they come back on.

As for your problem mike it sounds your computer noticed this problem and is shutting your lights off to save the battery. But it seems both of you have a bad door switch. Bring it back to the dealer

Anybody come up with a fix for the short time on the courtesy lights.
My 06 just started doing the same thing.

No, this is not the way the courtesy lights are supposed to work. Yes, they turn off by themselves, but after 1 - 2 minutes...not 5 seconds. Yes, this is a very common problem on these trucks.

There are two things you can do. The first is to disconnect both batteries for awhile (30 minutes or so). For most people, this is the fix...it worked for mine.

However, there is also a TSB for the problem. I believe it is:
Dome light turning off too soon / Overhead temp inaccurate TSB 08-026-06

Although it's a little thing, the lights turning off too soon is very aggravating! Hopefully one of these will work for you. --Eric

my problem is not interior lights going out to soon they stay on to long. What is the color and location of the wire that controls the interior lights sometimes I want to be able to get out of truck without lighting and making noise. Also how do you disable key in ignition chime from going off when exiting truck? Where is that annoying sound maker located on 2003 dodge 3500 laramie?

Talking My problem is fixed

I had the same problem, courtesy light shut off in 10-15 secs. I tried everything and the dealer could not figure it out. The Dodge district field rep. refused the call me on the issue (the coward). Well, I tried the battery disconnect for 45 min. and guess what, it worked. The lights now stay on for 10 mins. with the doors open and then shut off like they are suppose too.
I called my dealer and let the poor service manager know what worked and about the TSB notice. The guy was trying everything to help me and going out of his way to try and figure a fix. He greatly appreciated it since he had a female customer with the same problem who worked the evening shift and got home at midnight and was outraged with the problem. So maybe this will help others with solve problem. I have a buddy who has the same problem, so I will have him try it with his truck when he gets home tonight. Thanks for the help, this was driving me crazy!!!!!!! Dave
