I want to repaint my rusty rear axle

Hello, all! Does anyone have experience repainting their slightly rusty rear axle? I am starting to research the project. I am looking at using a can of some type of spray paint and just tape off everything I don't want the black paint on.
If you have done this, what exact paint did you use? Also, I would really appreciate any tips and tricks. Thanks in advance for the replies!!

You need to neutralize the rust first or you are wasting your time. Rust will come back in short time. I would try somehing like this first. Then you can paint over it without rust coming back.
I used it on my boat engine and it worked really well to stop corrosion from coming back. Worked well on boat trailer also. They sell similiar product at boat stores and hardware stores also.

I just used an aggressive wire brush on a drill, followed by some carb cleaner, and black high temp spray paint. When you are due for a fluid change is a good time to do it.

Although the rust on mine wasn't real bad, it looked like the workers in Mexico had used a broom to dab on the existing paint. I just wire brushed off what I could and hit it with Rustoleum primer followed by a can of their black paint. Several years later and a touch=up or 2 and it still looks better than when new.

No deep rust here, just surface so I used a wire brush to knock off everything I could. Then acetone wipe down. Self etch primer (IIRC) and then some Rustoleum black spray paint satin or semi, can't remember). It's holding fine.

I didn't get ocd about this as my intention to clean it up to look a little better than rust. I didn't make anything or get picky.

Thanks for the info guys! Yep, I'm just looking to cover up a little surface rust. I knew some of you guys had to have painted yours. I just wanted to make sure I was on the right track. I appreciate the replies!

I'll grab a photo for you in a little bit of the axle how it looks today. Can't remember exactly when I painted it but its been at least a year, possibly two.

I finally got it done! Steel wool, wipe down with micro fiber towel, Rustoleum Rust Reformer black, Rustoleum black satin. I did a lot of taping off and using cut apart garbage bags to keep the black paint off of everything I didn't want black. I may do the sides of the frame you can see in the rear wheel wells next...maybe.

I live in AZ so not too much rust here but the paint on the front and rear axle of my 05 was starting to show signs of age.

I started a project to undercoat my whole truck; wheel wells, axles, leaf springs, etc., just about everything that didn't get real hot with that 3M Rubberized Undercoating.

I'm only about half done but so far the project is looking good.
