How can I tell by the VIN # if the truck is a 2004 or a 2004.5

I believe you can look at the sticker on the side of the motor and the build date. Line mine, my build date is 11/03 so obviously it's got to be an 04, and quoted from D45 in a previous post about this:

"Driver side of the valve cover, should say ISB305...... if it is the 305/555 motor, which was a 2004 motor.

The 325/600 came out in the 04.5 model year.

You possibly could have the 250 motor, but it sounds like yours might be a 2004 year"

 

04.5 has a build date of Jan 1 2004.

04.5 has 325/600.

04.5 has cat.

04.5 has electronic wastegate.

HTH...

 

04.5 and up have a sticker on side of valve cover stating 325 hp...... cats run away, build dates get confusing, but I have yet to see someone remove that rated hp sticker.

 

And Cali trucks came with cats and less HP

 

I came to this forum to post this exact question. I am doing quite a bit of shopping on the internet. Looking to buy an 04. Is there any code in the serial number that will give it away?

So far every 04 I've looked at on the internet shows the VIN#. They don't show the wastegate, the cat or the sticker on the valve cover. Is there any way to tell by the VIN#? Thanks.

 

the 10th number in your vin is the year but it wont tell if its an 04 or 04.5
