How do I find out if I have a 2004.5
2004.5 refers to the introduction of the 50 state 325hp/600fpt Cummins engines put in the midyear 2004 2500&3500 Ram trucks. There is not really a truck designation of 2004.5.
Look on the Engine Label on the drivers side of the valve cover. It will state HP 325@2900 rpm I think and Torque 600@xxxx rpm if it is a HO 325/600(04.5). Dont remember exact numbers. It will also have an engine build date. Anything after 1/12/04 build date should be a 325/600 HO. Just look at this label and it will tell what build date, HP and Torque the engine produces.

I too have an 04.5 and I love it to death. I think most of the guys that say "pray for the -555" are the ones that are jealous they didn't get the 600
As far as all those rumors about vibes, recalls, bad mileage, and such, Ive never had an ounce of issue with my truck, with 12,500 miles on it.

hah
just turned 14,000 miles on my truck diesel junkie
not a problem that couldnt be fixed by Joliet Dodge, i had the vibe but new driveshaft = fixed.
the mileage is great ... well pretty nice? no mods and after a fresh oil change i gained 1 mpg???? the oil only had 6000 miles on it :/ its still around 16 mpg with the mix of 30% highway and 70% town.

The 555's will go 10,000 miles and the dipstick is still readable through the oil. The 600's are much more commonly afflicted with injector problems, white smoke at startup, poor mpg(compared), and blackening the oil. I believe the oil blackening is due to the introduction of all of the emissions 'crap' , such as a catalytic converter, and possibly a third injection event..
To me none of that is worth a measly 20 extra hp and 55lbs of torque..
Guys by the way I don't mean to come off hard on 04.5+, all in all they are still BY FAR the best diesel choice out there, and are still great Cummins engines. They just have a handful of new side effects to the emissions-driven changes they made. I just happened to be buying at the time I had a choice between them, and am glad I got my free breathin' 555
