fuel tank vent mod?
fuel tank vent mod?
i was wondering if anyone has made their own fuel tank vent, like gdp's but for like 5 bucks instead of 60? i believe it could be done with a 3/4 barbed end fitting and some 3/4 hose. drill through the top part of the tank put the barbed end at the highest point and use some silicone to seal it. does this sound crazy or does it work. surely someone has had to thought of this? i imagine you would have to block the stock location as well right?
I spent less than $20 on the parts for mine.

I printed off the parts list and tried to get all the parts local to save some money. Here in Laramie the stores are a little limitted so I was not able to come up with everything so I just ordered the kit. When I was back in Omaha I went to lowes (just out of curiosity) to see if they had the stuff. Sure enough if I just would have waited a few months I could have saved a little money.
I used nylon fittings. I let them soak for at least a week, half in half out of diesel fuel. I did not use the gasket that came with the bulkhead fitting, it showed a small amount of swelling. I use nitrile O'rings instead. I would have used brass if I could have found a decent priced bulkhead fitting.
I did the vent mod for less than $10.

the only thing i could see worrying about would be having the thingtake the coating off of the metal that he has spliced into the original vent but i highly doubt it!
i would also like to knwo how much more fuel are we talking aobut here 3-4 gallons?

The gain is about 4 to 5 gallons. When filling the tank and the pump clicks off it is full. Cannot add more. You can get more in the tank without the mod, but takes several minutes.
I now drive for more than 100 miles before the fuel gauge starts to move.
I would not have done the vent mod by itself, but I had to drop the tank the get the quick disconnect on the fuel line to turn loose when I replaced my fuel lift pump.

This is a viable idea. In fact, I just read a writeup with great install pics. I'll see if I run across the link again ad post it.
I gained right at 4 gallons from mine. One of the best mods I have done to the truck. It has made rode trips easier for me since I cannot stand stopping for fuel. It is great being able to drive back to see family and not having to stop.
