Fuel tank fill-up ?

How many more gallons of fuel have you guys been squeezing into a tank after pump does first click-off? I have a longbox with a 35 gal. tank--did first fill last night in 18 degree F. temp. Put about 3.5 more gal. (took extra 5 minutes) before I got cold standing outside and still did not see fuel in the neck--lots of foaming. My previous Powerstroke would take 4.5 to fill after first click-off. Just wondering.

I've never really paid much attention to it honestly, but considering how long it takes me to fill up because I think I have to top every tank off until the fuel is all but running out on the ground....I'd guess between 4 and 5 gallons maybe.

Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?

i JUST fuelled up an hour ago I`m with you hoss, for some reason i cant stop till its pouring out the tank :- I have that uneasy fealing if its no to the top.because of that, i CANT go to full service stations.

I`d say 3.5 to 5 gallons till its full, after the click.

i wish they could figure a way to make it less foamy ??? Usually while i`m filling i see 3 cars pull up, gas up, and leave on the other side of the pump.

Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?

Have you heard of harpooning your tank? There's a thread on TheDieselStop.com that tells how to do it. Fords have the same problem. I've been putting up with slow fueling on both tanks on my '91 F250 for 12 years. My new truck will be harpooned.

The problem is the vent tube extends too far into the tank. It needs to be cut as short as possible.

I will check next time but I put in a TON more fuel after it clicks off, 4-5 gals. Its so annoying that it foams so early and you have to sit there forever filling and waiting over and over again. Hopefully some inventive soul on one of these forums will figure out a solution for 3rd Gen dodges!

Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?

Call me wacky, but I let it run until it clicks, then.... hang it up and go pay.

Stopping for fuel every 600 miles or so isn't all that much less convenient than stopping every 700, which is what I might get by cramming every available drop on board.

Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?

I just filled up a whole lot of times this past week. From when the light goes on, I got about 30 gallons in including post-click. Usually I will let the foam settle down a little bit before I try to fill up more. Click happens at about 28.5 and I go to 30ish.

I WISH we had a bigger fuel tank and am definitely looking into getting some kind of auxiliary tank...

Hey Lightman, if you go pay after it clicks off the first time (assuming that its 4-5 gallons shy of being full) where's the fuel guage needle pointing at? Is it pegged?

I've read these threads here (and at the Diesel Stop) with interest. I've filled my truck up 53 times, I've never been able to squeeze more than a gallon in after it clicks off. And the needle always pegs itself on full.

Are you guys saying that if I invest more time I can fill it up with with 5 more gallons? I can hear the foam when I fill it - if that makes any difference.

When my low fuel light goes on, I can fill it with 24.5 - done it many times. If what you're saying is true, I should really be able to fill it with almost 30? Something doesn't balance with me here. Long beds hold more fuel?

Yeah, 70 in the bed would be nice.

Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?

Bulabula - yes you can filll 4-5 more gals after. I put in 33 gals the other day. Its a ridiculously tedious thing though. Once it clicks, pull the nozzle almost all the way out, so you can see down the filler neck. Slowly fill till the foam reaches the tip of the nozzle. WAIT for foam to subside a few inches, fill a little more, repeat till you're sick in the head, and eventually, the actual FUEL will be visible about 2" from where cap goes. You are then FULL ;D This is the only way to get completely accurate mpg readings.

When filling to the click, my needle reads right on F. When filling FULL, the needle is past F on the gauge.

Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?

hmmm, hot or cold I click it about 3 times and usually get about 27 gallons in, depending on how empty I ran it. At first I thought I was really doing good until I realized I get maybe a gallon more in. Doesn't seem like a good use of my time to me. Mileage? I have 30k worth of records that show within 1/2 a mpg under similar operating conditions so I feel I am fairly consistent.

Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?

It's clearly a waste of time to do to simply get 75 more miles out of your tank. However it's the only way to accurately measure mpg, and I think the point here, is that we'd like to figure out a way to be able to fill those extra 4-5 gals in without all the foaming and waiting. I know on VW TDI's there was a very similar situation, and if the fuel vent button is removed, you can fill all the way to the top - 2 more gals than before. IF there's some sort of similar solution that would make filling the extra 5 easy, it certainly would be advantageous to do so... Come on all you engineers ;D

Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?

Are you saying on your 04 you can jjust fill with a few clicks and see the still level of fuel inches from where the cap is? If thats true you may be the only one I've heard of. I'd love to figure out a way to get my 04 like that...

Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?

I'm with CP, seems ridiculous to stand there and "clickety, click, click, clickety". I too let it click off, pull the nozzle, hang it up, and get back to business. This pegs the guage at "F". Although I haven't researched it thouroughly, I'm betting that the Old School Ram runs as good if not better on the top half of the tank as it does on the bottom. I seldom let it get below 1/4 tank, rarely hear the fuel chime, and have NEVER run it out of fuel. I have often been acused of being "****" in the care of my truck....but standing at the pump clicking away?.....Maaaan.
