Fuel tank fill-up ?
Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?
LIGHTMAN ! "You definitely do feel like a moron topping it off for 10 minutes =] I need a 70 gal transferflow!"
I never feel like a moron because I drive a Big Dodge Cummins Diesel!! 8) ;D I'm the envy of all others!!
Not that it really matters but I think it's coool being able to drive 150 or so miles before the needle starts to move down.......

Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?
I can usually squeeze another two to two and a half gallons in the tank with no problem in just two minutes....I don't usually waste any more time than that at the filling station.
Re:Fuel tank fill-up ?
I saw a guy one time bouncing his truck around by pushing on it, and jumping on the bumper, trying to get a little more diesel in it
It amazed me not just because the act looked moronic to begin with, but it was raining like crazy, and I kept wondering , what this guy was doing
I guess he was attempting to settle the foam down or something

Hey Todd,
Did you have any problem getting fuel back to the engine after you ran it dry? I have been tempted to let mine cough to find out just how much the tank will hold but am afraid about the problem of repriming the system. When my fuel light came on I put 34.7 gal in.

If you run it out, it won't die all at once. You will notice it when you get on the throttle, it will be weak and rattle a little. At this point you should turn the switch off. Make sure you have a fuel can with you and know exactly how much fuel is in the can. You will also have to record the miles from your run-out to the gas station to figure how much of your can-fuel you used up. Mine started up fine, just cranked a few extra rounds.
One time I drove 93 miles after the fuel light came on, 73 miles after 0 miles to empty, 743 total miles on that tank. I didn't run out that day but I put 40.77 gallons in when I got to the pump. I got curious and ran it completely out the next time and that's when it held right around 41 gallons.
The fuel gauge needle WILL eventually touch the peg and you can still drive for several miles. According to my fuel milage and distance traveled, there must be around 5 gallons left after the fuel light comes on.
I wouldn't recommend running the truck out of fuel, if you have the 35 gal tank, you can be assured it will hold probably exactly what mine does. (but if you're like me, you'll run it out anyway!)

I'm with you 'Old School' Clicking and waiting doesn't sound like a lot of fun.
You boys must be from down South. Try fueling at around 0-F with a stiff breeze. It won't be too many clicks and you'll be back in the cab.
MPG, I have a fuel card, you enter the Odometer at fill ups, subract the start mileage from the end mileage and divide that by the gals. used, now THAT gives you an overall mpg, if one needed one.
But isn't all that available on them fancy "Trip Computers"?
DON'T TELL ME THEY'RE NOT ACCURATE!?

I have been watching this thread with great interest. I began to think that maybe I was missing something by letting the fuel nozzle shut itself without resetting 1400 times. Then, I was fueling in Rapid City South Dakota when I notice a huge soda roll off the side of an 03, and distribute itself everywhere. I notice the operator cursing the spilled pop, and the picture becomes clear. After throwing his fit, he continues to fill the truck till the nozzle clicks off, then proceeds to jump on the running board and starts rocking the truck back and forth, then clicks again, then climbs into the back of the truck and stomps around in the bed, then clicks the fuel nozzle and repeats, over and over and over. Lightman, you and this thread immediately came to mind but I thought to myself "no way, it can't be!" I walked up and politely commented on the good looks and color of his truck, then asked if he minded me asking what the hell he was doing. He said he couldn't be satisfied that the tank was completely full until the foam settled, and he would continue to put more in until he could see the fuel, sometimes this process could take as much as a HALF HOUR!......BWA ha ha.... I'm not missing anything...you guys are just nuts!
But wait I see there's more...Some of you actually carry a can of fuel and run your machine dry on purpose, just to see if you can account for some fuel you may have missed somewhere?? ...smirks, snickers,....can't hold it any longer BWAA HA HAA haa ha heh.... OK, OK, Really, I'm not laughing at you all, I'm laughing with you.....No wait.....I guess I am laughing AT you, but I am a true believer in the fact the everybody flies their own ship here in the good old U. S. of A.. and by laughing I mean to offend no one. I'm sure I do a few things that you cats may get a chuckle out of, but.......oh well.
Old School really hoping to see another guy jumping around on his truck for quicker foam abatement, but really, really, hoping to see a 3rd gen. CTD hooked to a gooseneck in traffic with a guy pouring fuel from a beaker, reading a stop watch and recording results on a clipboard.....BWAAA HA ha ha...really cracking myself up.

He he, you make me chuckle. Havent seen that one yet. Jumping on the running boards, and then in the bed??
I did carry extra fuel when i drove the Al-Can. Mainly because i was getting about 350 miles a tank (according to the "low fuel light") and fuel stops in the winter can be further. Didnt want to run out at -40°F with the wife and kids.
Carry a 5 gal can all the time now in AK. You never know when somebody may need a helping hand.

People,
I believe that your fueling "problem" will be greatly reduced if you set the auto fill to it's slowest rate. This should reduce the foaming and thus allow you to get more fuel in the first time. This has greatly reduced my time at the pump and allowed me to be on my way a lot quicker. Let me know if I am "full of air".
