Fuel mileage
Fuel mileage
I was just wondering what alot of people are getting for mileage out of the 03 4x4 with 4:10 rears. Im only seeing about 15mph combination of little towing but mostly just driving empty? Is there anything a guy could do to improve it? Thanks.
Re:Fuel mileage
I have 3:73s so I can't comment from personal experience. This topic has been discussed many times previously. Try the search feature. I am sure you'll find your answer to this question.
Re:Fuel mileage
Have the same truck.
Best I can do is 15.8 by the computer.
Concensus is a bigger tire (10%) should give the equivelent of 3.73. I figure, based on what I read here, that 305's should be about right.
Only a lurker, have not tried the bigger tires yet. I have just learned that my gas mileage is going to suffer for the 4.10

Re:Fuel mileage
Fuel mileage is a fickle thing. It depends on how many miles your truck has on it. In other words, is it broken in. Your driving habits, your speed, what you are towing or carrying, the fuel blend, the temperature, highway or city, road conditions. You get the picture.
If your truck is broken in, if you are driving solo at a reasonable speed (keeping it under 2200 RPM) and in a reasonable manner, then you should see 18 to 20 or sometimes even better. If you drive like my brother in law, well .......... :

Re:Fuel mileage
I don't think your mileage is out of line of what can be expected. I didn't see what your towing (weight wise), and "a little towing" is also ambiguous.
There are many variables to consider, including auto or manual tranny, 4x4 or 4x2, gears, fuel quality, seasonal temps, and MOST importantly - driving habits.
This has been discussed over and over here, and it seems that 4.10's don't hamper mileage all that much over 3.73's.
My lowest mileage ever for a tank of fuel was 14.3, but that was caused by lots of high idling running an inverter in the aftermath of hurricane Isabelle powering wet vacs and carpet shampoo'ers.

Re:Fuel mileage
Have 30K+ on mine. Get 19 to 21 mpg at 55 to 60 mph empty. Push the speed up to 70-75 mph and the mileage is around 18 to 19. I tow a 5er with a combined weight around 20,000 lb. and get 11-12 mpg at 65 mph. I have gotten 26 mpg while driveing at 45 mph with the tailgate down (an all day trip).
These figures are from the computer which I have checked several times and it has been right on each time checked.

Re:Fuel mileage
I have the 3:73's with the 48re and drive mostly on the freeway between work and home. I usually go about 70 which puts me around 1900rpm. Milage on the computer is at about 21 - 22mph but doing the numbers by hand comes to around 15.5 - 16mph :'(
I now have about 4K on the truck with a couple of good towing trips for a total of about 400 miles. I'm still waiting for the 18 - 20mph :
With that said, I love my 04! NO DRONE, NO VIBRATION AND LOTS OF POWER WITH THE EZ. Wish my seats were more comfortable, but then again, I'm 6'10". My Ford seats were great though - just can't seem to get comphy...
One more thing - Not sure that Dodge has the tranny right yet. I would like lock up a little earlier and feel that the clutch does do some slipping even after lock up although I can't be sure.
my 2 cents
