Fuel Filter Replacement
Gonna replace the fuel filter any helpful hints before i do this? Going with a wix replacement hope it all works out gud. Just in case it is the canister to the right of the engine above the fuel water drain valve right?
Yep that's where it is. Drain fuel, remove top and filter, clean water sensor and crud (if any), put diesel on o-ring, re-install new filter, turn key to on, wait a bit, turn off then on again, wait a bit, then start, check for leaks. May take awhile to start it, but don't worry it will.
yeah that's it. Pull the lever to drain first, then with a 1 1/8 inch socket remove the cap. After the new one is in I would cycle the key on 2-3 times before trying to start to refill the fuel system.

Always keep an extra under the seat also. I left the truck with my wife while I was travelling on business and she actually had it towed to a shop because she said it was running bad. 300 dollar fuel filter. ouch.
need to teach her how to change it too... I got my 4 year old nephew wanting me to change mine every time he comes over, he could probably do it for you even.
Also, just a side note, in the technical section, there is a very good writeup on how to change the fuel filter.

Just downgraded from my 06 to an 03...........did the fuel filter for the first time today.......my rig has 126k on it and I just picked it up last week so I thought I would swap out the filter.....took all of 10 minutes.......the filter was black too......what a simple job though..........
It seams I can only get about 4000 to 5000 miles out of a filter before it starts to run bad. Anyone else getting short life out of their filters?? I have used Wix and Lubrifiner Filters.
I'm changing mine for the first time based on the owner's manual intervals - 30k. I haven't noticed any reduced performance our rough idling etc. but I do buy my fuel from the same location (local). Still getting around 16 mpg in town driving (stock tires/auto/4.10s).
Take this with a grain of salt, but...
We need new pics and a new procedure written up. We also need a mod to the #$%^& drain valve that leaks fuel from around the threads instead of dropping the fuel down the clear tube. This is a very messy, #$%^& job on the 6.7L
Speaking of an easy job...I had my truck at the dealership for service and they asked me if I wanted them to change the Fuel filter, I said yes assuming they were just going to charge me for the filter as it's such a simple change out,...when everything was done I went to pay and saw they charged me $120 for the fuel filter change
I thought there was some kind of mistake until they showed me their service price list...So uh yeah, don't let your dealership do it for you
