Does the front driveshaft rotate at all times on the Jeeps?

Yes. And that fitting is for just what raycarlson said, an alignment joint, also known as a ball & cup socket. Your not lubing the u-joint.

I wouldn't think that would work, it looks too big, as opposed to the needle type.

No, the bigger one IS the correct one. Imagine the point of it fitting perfectly into the cup of the fitting, when you pump grease in it forces the ball inside and grease then flows INTO the joint. My problem is I cannot get the point to seal against the fitting and grease goes everywhere, next time I try going through the cross member.

The pointy needle type would push the ball out of the way, grease would flow but then when it's sposed to be forced into the joint it will not, it will ooze out the hole past the needle cuz it's not sealed at all.

Yup, it mates perfectly but there's no actual seal.

The first time will be the hardest, as the check valve for the zerk fitting is probably stuck in place. Once you get it lubed and keep it lubed it becomes much easier subsequent times.

iaddiesel, the fitting I posted is a female zerk fitting for a grease gun - it's for female zerk fittings like we have on the u-joint. The hypodermic needle many people use is for poking into rubber boots, not for female zerk fittings.

haha, not for me ... and I even used a scratch awl to loosen up the ball first ... after I cleaned it all up.

Probably the best tip I heard for doing this is to use a pistol grip gun ... I bet my next lube will be a litlle less frustrating.

I tried the fitting in HOV's post and had absolutely no luck. The hypo needle worked well when I did mine.

That picture is of the short needle. Napa sells one that is about 6 or 8 inches long that makes this a lot easier.

Hmmm, just the opposite here. I wrecked two packs of hypo needles and made a few trips to NAPA before I found the female zerk fitting that worked.

Hey, whatever works!

I will have to get one and see how it works just for grins. The needle works great do far for me and I know it gets in, because after I drive it a few days the exec slings out on th eunder side of the body. But I will try the correct fitting and let you know how it works for me.
