Exhaust vibration
Exhaust vibration
There was a lump between my turbo and muffler clogging up my pipe so I had my exhaust man cut it out for now.
Now, I have a vibration that seems to be coming from the engine and going from the exhaust to the frame. It is not a continuous vibration, but more like a wobble that lasts for a couple seconds and then goes away. It is quite noticeable from inside or outside the truck. It happens when you first shift into gear from park or neutral, and also while slowing down at low speeds such as in a parking lot. I have looked under the truck while my wife shifted into gear and you can actually see the exhaust pipe wobble right after the truck is shifted.
I'm thinking that this could partially explain the vibration at highway speeds also. If the engine is able to transfer vibration to the frame that bad at idle or low speeds, maybe it is transferring a higher frequency vibration to the frame at higher speeds as well.
Do the engine mounts wear out on these trucks? Could that be allowing the engine to vibrate? Also the stock exhaust is very tight, although I have tried disconnecting the hanger in front of the muffler and the vibration is still there.
Any ideas?

Did he clamp or weld the pipe he put in? I had this problem when I did a muff delete, I clamped the delete pipe on so that the pipe bowed a little... Imagine stuffing a piece of wood in a frame that is too short, the wood bows up in the middle. If he clamped it, try loosening one side and making the pipe shorter, for lack of better words... bring them to each other and clamp it back.
Hope that's what it is...

He welded it. We have already taken it apart once and turned the pipe some and rewelded it with no success.
I thought about inserting a section of flex pipe (the kind semi's use) but he said that it won't last more than 6 months under the truck. It looks pretty tough to me though, I don't see how it could wear out that quick. Does anyone around here run that stuff?

We use that on our dump trucks at work. He is right, it wont last more than a year. But if it helps, maybe you could get by with it. The flex pipe seems to rust out real quick. I would use some hi temp paint on it.
