Educate me please

I was reading a post on the Help forum where codes were being thrown by the front wheel speed sensor.

1. What is the purpose of the speed sensor?
2, How does it work?
3. Where is it located?
4. Is there only one?

Thanks!

Somebody else can confim this but I believe it's also referred to as the "ABS" sensor. If so, it's the black plastic doo-hickey with the wires coming out of it on each of your front unit bearings ("hubs"). Have to remove the brake caliper and rotor to access it. By the looks of it, it works off of the hall effect (magnetics).

a wheel speed sensor is technically an abs sensor. there should be either 4 or 3. one on each wheel in the front and one in the differential or on each wheel on the rear.

the purpose is to measure the speed of each wheel independant of the vehicle speed during braking so the abs system can determine which wheel is spinning and which one has locked up to tell the abs computer that it needs to release some brake pressure to that wheel to not let it lock up during a hard braking situation so you still have steering while slowing down.

Each front wheel has a speed sensor, and the 2 rear wheels share one. The ABS system needs to know the speed of each wheel so it can tell if one or more wheels are decelerating faster than the others during a brake application.
