Draining your oil FILTER

I have done this on other vehicles and used it on my 5.9l. I take a 12" small standard screwdriver(sharper the better) and hammer and make a hole centered in the bottom of the oil filter. This allows the oil to drian out of the filter so when you loosen it you don't get oil all over everything. When the oil is just dripping out of the hole, take a piece of paper towel and use the same screwdriver and push it in the hole. Now you can use your filter wrench and remove the filter with no oil running all over the place.

Hope this keeps your garage cleaner.

Why go thru all the trouble
All it takes is a paper towel when removing the filter and you don't oil over anything because the oil filter comes straight down without a problem

I and most people (at least I think) use a plastic grocery bag. Cover the filter with the bag, and grasp it with the bag, unscrew and let the filter drop straight down into the bag, or hold it... This is a drip free method and has worked for me a few times so far.

I never had a problem with it. I just reach in UN-screw, pull it out and set it in the pan. It never spills or even drops a drop, usually a oil filter change takes 2-3 minuets.

Mine too. I unscrewed the filter and not a drop came out. I was expecting it to, but to my surprise, not a drop. This engine is awesome.

I think Douglas has a great idea! On my Ram the filter came down w/o a drop much to my suprise. On other vehicles therre is almost always a battle-w-the draining oil and a hole in the filter will fix this. THANKS Doug!

Yep, these filters are a breeze to change without anything spilling. I just grab it, then dump the oil out of it and throw it in a Ziploc bag.

If you want to see a mess, try a filter change on a Mazda RX-7. I used to own two of them. The filter is upside down on the top of the engine. It's nice and easy to change, but if you don't punch a hole in it, there will be a major mess.
