Did all 04's come from factory with cold weather high idle?
I don't think mine did. Mine will not idle high and it has been in the 20's here. Is that not cold enough? My service tech couldn't tell me anything. He even hooked the computer up to it and couldn't find where it is programmed at.
These things don't heat up very good. :-[

Re:Did all 04's come from factory with cold weather high idle?
The high idle takes a while to kick in. Think I read at least two minutes, but it seems more like 4 or 5 minutes after a cold start. Other conditions: below 32 degrees, emergency brakes set, 0% throttle, 0% brake. I do think that it goes to high idle right away at 0 degrees, but have no first hand knowledge.
The exhaust brake will also engage if the water temp is below 140 degrees.
Last week mine went to high idle with the overhead temp at 32. After a couple minutes it went back down to regular idle and the overhead said 34 degrees.

Get an e brake if you want heat. Two minutes and you should get fast idle. Mine is two minutes on the mark. Heats up fine with the ebrake and high idle engaged.

I thought the high idle was burned into the prom. Nothing to turn on or off.
Mine kicks in at 2 minutes, you can set your watch by it. Now if its really cold, it'll rev right to 1000 rpm at start up. Can sound a little disconcerting the first time it happens.

I would think all the '04 have the high idle. I've got no idea how long I have to wait until it kicks in because I start it then go into the house for whatever. When I come back out, it's at 1000 rpms.
Did you have it plugged in? If so, it may have been warm enough to be outside the cold idle parameters.
They do take a bit to warm up; mostly because they're compression ignition and the fact that there's a LOT of iron to warm up. That's why it's recommended that you drive them easily to warm them up quicker rather than prolonged idling. Get them up to operating temperature as quick as possible without overstressing them.

The high idle works as everyone said with one exception. Two weeks ago when we had -21 below weather, the truck would start and within five or six seconds it would go up to the 1000 rpm idle...it was very quick and no two minute waiting period. Now that the weather is in the twenties, it takes the usual two minutes before the high idle kicks in. All times, I had it plugged in on a timer so I knew the engine was as warm as it could get from the block heater.

Re:Did all 04's come from factory with cold weather high idle?
Any of you ordered or bought your truck in a warmer climate. I have started mine and let it idle for 30 min. with no high idle. It was 32 deg at the time.
I just don't think mine came with it ???
I'll try tomorrow morning. I think it is suppose to drop into the high 20's
And, no I never have had it plugged in.
Not needed in NC.

whats with this high idle feature, and why are you guys waiting 2 minutes for it? Once it kicks to high idle then what are you guys doing? Are you letting your trucks warm up for 5-10 mins?
It takes me about that long to fetch the little step stool so I can clean off the center portion of the windshield.
My neighbor saw me doing that once and bought me a nice extendable scraper as a gift.
And yes, mine's idled 5-10 mins on occasion. Many occasions.

As long as I don't have frost to scrape off the windshield, I just jump right in and drive off. I don't let it sit and idle. My neighborhood is big enough to gradually warm it up.
