convince me not to get a sierra this weekend
Make sure you pre-order your intermediate steering shafts. You'll need at least three for the first 50kmi. Might want to have a speedometer on hand as well. I hope they changed the power window motors on the new trucks.... the old ones almost always broke.
I had four Chev's before my first Dodge. All of these problems happened on the 99 and newer models.... and all of the trucks my friends and family own as well. All of them. My cousin's 1500 got so bad that it spent most of it's time in the dealer being fix when she couldn't take not having a truck anymore. I did the same after my 04 spent more than a month in the shop over the course of 10 re-occuring problems. All were under warranty except the third speedometer (which went out at 37,000 miles). After that, I had enough. My friends 2500 was on it's third shaft in 30kmi when he got rid of it. He managed to miss the speedo problems. My dad's 1500 went in the shop for his THIRD shaft AND a THIRD speedometer yesterday. He has also had the transmission replaced (his cost), a rear bumper replaced, a power steeting pump replaced, the four wheel drive button assembly replaced (happened to my 04 as well). Truck has been off road very little and only tows a two place snowmobile trailer (maybe 1500lbs). Every single Silverado that I know personally has had at least two steering shafts put in them.
I love Chevy and GMC trucks. That's why I had four. Love the look of the GMC specifically. I kept hoping I would find the one truck that would hold together for me. I never did, it just got worse. My 95 was the best. It only ate up U-joints and valve cover gaskets. Everything else worked.
If you do buy the new Sierra, Congrats. I really like it and I hope you can be the one to tell me its ok to buy GM again.

my brother had an 01 that he drove 120k miles and never did aything to. it had 70k on the original spark plugs and the brake pads made it 70k. it was a heck of a truck for a gas rig. got good money for it when he sold it too. drives an 06 5.9 2500 mega cab now though and loves it.
I just got an 08 Silverado and dad has an 07 Avalanche. Dad put 38K on it in its first year and has not had one single problem. He loves it. I love both of them. I know its not a GMC, but they are essentially the same truck. I was in the same boat you are where I was considering a Cummins or the Silverado and went with the Silverado. They wanted way to much for the Dodge and the customer service was horrible. I got the Silverado with the Bose, Leather, Sunroof and everything else for quite a bit less than the Dodge with cloth, no sunroof and the Infinity stereo. Yes I know the Cummins is a great engine, but I think I got a better truck with the Silverado, especially the interior. I don't tow alot and it will also be better on gas mileage than the Dodge.
I don't think you can base purchasing a truck based on fuel prices. They are always changing. Diesel is almost 50 cents more where I'm at. Gas prices may be a dollar more next year, but the way prices are, diesel might be even more. I went with the Silverado and I'm happy with my decision.
A buddy of mine has an 07 Sierra and he loves it and has had no problems what so ever either.
