convince me not to get a sierra this weekend
RBulldogger,
Your CTD will hold its resale value a lot longer then any gas engine pickup will. The other day when I was at the dealer they asked if I was ready to buy a new one as they have a long waiting list for used CTD’s and they would give me top $$ to trade mine in. As if I would trade mine in being it only has 21K on it

I saw a 94 reg cab 2wd 12v auto for sale the other day for 12,500!!! and the paint on the hood was faded...it sold for 11,500....
hang on to the cummins since its payed for...drive it till the wheels fall off and you can still get probably 8-10k for it

I just got an 08 Silverado and dad has an 07 Avalanche. Dad put 38K on it in its first year and has not had one single problem. He loves it. I love both of them. I know its not a GMC, but they are essentially the same truck. I was in the same boat you are where I was considering a Cummins or the Silverado and went with the Silverado. They wanted way to much for the Dodge and the customer service was horrible. I got the Silverado with the Bose, Leather, Sunroof and everything else for quite a bit less than the Dodge with cloth, no sunroof and the Infinity stereo. Yes I know the Cummins is a great engine, but I think I got a better truck with the Silverado, especially the interior. I don't tow alot and it will also be better on gas mileage than the Dodge.
nah man, the new gmc's look tuff. guy at work has i guess its an 08 gmc lifted......looks sweet
still wouldnt trade it for my cummins though.
and yeah, when i bought my 06 dodge, its was like 10k less than the best deal i could strike on a comparable ford or chevy

I think they are good looking trucks and ride like a caddy compared to these trucks. But the dodge is a HD real truck.
Main thing that kept me from buying a chevy was the cummins and that I might tow heavy a couple times a year... I hated when I was stuck with a too light duty of a truck
. Also think this cummins will keep it's resale value better and will run longer.

I don't think you can base purchasing a truck based on fuel prices. They are always changing. Diesel is almost 50 cents more where I'm at. Gas prices may be a dollar more next year, but the way prices are, diesel might be even more. I went with the Silverado and I'm happy with my decision.
A buddy of mine has an 07 Sierra and he loves it and has had no problems what so ever either.

Lots of wisdom in this post^^.
I think people don't give enough importance to interior comfort. IMO, the interior is how you interact with the vehicle for every moment you spend behind the wheel. Being comfortable is important, and there's no "badge of honor" for all those hours in a truck that rides like a buckboard buggy.
Fuel costs shouldn't be a big consideration because they vary so much-- at least as far as gas vs. diesel. I'd focus instead on which gas got the best mpg for a gas engine and which diesel got the best diesel mpg.
If I wanted a gasser half-ton, I'd have to look at a GMC or a Dodge. The GMCs are just so nicely trimmed and comfortable, and GMs 5.3 or Dodge's 4.7 is more than capable for a "commuter" truck.
For a gasser HD truck, I'd look seriously at a Ford Super Duty. The interiors are nice, and majority of the truck is very stout as well.
My neighbor in Cheyenne traded his 01 HO CTD on a Chevy gasser. He got the same mileage, and it worked very well for him. Once he wasn't towing RVs anymore, there wasn't much justification for putting up with the less comfortable, less convenient and more expensive truck.
I love my CTD, but for me it's a luxury item. As long as I can afford to drive it, I'd like to. (paid for helps) But if I can't afford the maintenance or fuel, it's time for me to sell it and get something i CAN afford.
It's hard to ignore your heart, but vehicles should be bought with your head, and try to keep the emotions out of it. (which is the opposite of how the car dealers work).

I agree with the dealer statement. Thats one of the main reasons i didn't buy the truck from them. They were the only dealer in the area that had the truck I wanted (08 Inferno w/ Auto), but they only saw me as a dollar sign rather than a person. Within 20 minutes, I had 3 different salesmen do they "Let me go see what I can do" routine, one would leave and a different one would return, and the lowest they got me down to was $44K out the door. I had heard people paying under $40K for a truck like that. I didnt want to negotiate to much since I was just shopping around so I might have gotten lower, but I was fed up since they were BSing me so much already. The first time I went in there they were going to give me $10K off even though it was an 08 and it was supposed to only be on 07's but the second time they only offered me the $3500 rebate. So thats when I went to the Chevy dealer (we know the sales manager) and I got the Silverado for about 7-8K less with a lot more comforts and stuff I wanted like sunroof, center console, Premium stereo, etc.
Plus, like I said before. I won't tow much. I've pulled a 16ft tandem axle trailer with 3 scoops of mulch with dad's 07 Avalanche without a problem and our boat weights maybe 5K and the boat ramp is maybe 15 minutes away from the house. Plus I will probably be doing alot of city driving with my sales job, and with the regens and all that, I probably wouldnt get great mileage in the city anyway. So I would say ask yourself how much you will tow and how often and what are you looking for as far as interior with the Chevy being more comfortable in my opinion. After logically looking at everything, the Silverado was the better choice for me.

Type of fuel should be considered...
If your plan to keep your vehicle for several years consider there are more options for producing diesel fuel than there are for gasoline. Diesel can be produced from more non-petroleum sources and in greater amounts than gasoline or gasoline equivalents; propane and natural gas are produced from or in addition to petroleum oil. Ethanol production sources are far behind all the potential sources to make bio-diesel. And bio-diesel; like diesel has more bang for the buck than gasoline and it's equivalents. I believe the future is going to be more bio-diesel powered vehicles than gas/ethanol.
I had a 2000 Dakota prior to purchasing my CTD and it got 2-4 mpg worse mileage (with the 4.7L engine) than my diesel gets.
And as for maintenance on my CTD which is approaching 44K miles now, I have spent money only on routine fluid changes. My Dakota lost sensors, needed brakes far sooner, snapped the belt, etc. before it was traded with nearly 70K miles on it.

Like someone said, there is no reason not to go with the sierra if it fits your needs. I would have bought a gmc when I bought this truck, if gm made one in the quad cab configuration. The full crew cab is to long for my garage, and I don't like the suicide doors. So dodge was my only option, I still get ****** thinking about riding in my 06 ram, every time I ride in my dads 02 dmax. No jarring, backend bouncing, and at 140k no raddles or squeeks....can't say the same for my ram with 38k. Personally I think gm vehicles are built better, and everyone will say ifs doens't work. Well how many do you see on the side of the road broken.......I will take a smooth ride, over a solid axle any day... Also people always wanna throw out the chevy front ends....look in the forums, how many ball joint threads can you find......So maybe Gm front ends aren't all that bad.
