Black Powder Coated Wheels

Hey Folks, Just found your forum and absolutly love it! My question is to those of you that have powder coated your wheels black. I am in the process of buying a set of H2 wheels that I plan to have finished black. My question is what shade of black to use. I have a silver truck and dont really like gloss black. Do you use a satin or matte powder coat? It sounds like you can get several variations of the color but what do you think looks best. Im slowly getting rid of chrome and replacing with black. Any pictures would be appreciated.
Also as far as these wheels go they are the chrome version. Is there a certain media that has to be used? The powder coater want $95 an hour for blasting. I have access to a large blasting cabinet so i can do it myself. But want to do it correctly. What kind of blasting media should i use?

Bore your hubs before you strip and paint. My powdercoater told me no blasting as it would be to much and eat up the rim. I had mine powdercoated I think 50% gloss first time around as i didnt want shiny & a true flat black shows every little scuff in powder form. Figured it would be about right.

The guy who applied the powder put it on too thick the first time so they redid them including another chemical bath to strip. The second time around they did a 20% gloss and I think its just right.

As far as cost goes it was cheap. I had a sponsorship from them in the past so i have a good relationship w/ them.

Hope that helps.

yeah, cost is cheap. I will spend more on diesel to deliver and pick up! Yours look good. I've gotten several quotes and they all have said that the chrome will have to be blasted. Maybe I should check some other shops. Were yours chrome or the alloys?

I had gloss black on my red 98... I'm planning on getting the wheels on my current 98 and my 04 done in gloss black powdercoat. it stays looking cleaner better than non-gloss

Here's a pic of mine. They are a little dirty, but I went with a med gloss. After about a year there are a few chips that are only noticable up close. Not sure what could be done to prevent this.

My wheels are PC gloss black. Not H2s, just OEM. I don't think you will have a problem with gloss black. Pics in my gallery.

It was $20 per wheel to sandblast and $25 per wheel to PC....or $45 per wheel. But that was 2 years ago.

I have had it both ways....with and without the center caps. Finally just decided I like it better without. But, just like the Texas weather....it could change again.... http://s177.photobucket.com/albums/w...t=PICT0002.jpg

Those look sharp & different. Was it spendy to leave the machined area uncoated like that?
