battery drain...help
battery drain...help
i am experiencing serious drain, to the point i have to start the truck every day or else the batts are dead.. took it to the stereo shop that put these ""will never go dead"" batts in and he checked the draw of everything pulling off the battery & with everything unplugged it was still lighting up the test light like a christmas tree... he was stumped and i know little about this so i am no help. needless to say he was going to make some calls to friends at a dodge dealer to see what could potentialy be the problem. could this be my alternator going bad causing unexplained draw???
you need to narrow down what circuit is causing the draw.
how many amps are we talking here? if it is under 10A then hook your DMM inline with either positive or negative cable. won't matter. start pulling fuses, relays and disconnect alternator etc until you can isolate which circuit is causing the draw. if draw is over 10A you'll need to get your hands on an AMP clamp. sometimes fuses (or circuit breakers) will be listed for certain item but will also run an odd item or two not listed in the fuse description.
I've seen a fuse run a power antenna but be listed as only power door locks and an interior lamp fuse also power a body control module. OEM wiring information will list this stuff better than aftermarket stuff usually.
sorry i am not telling possible causes as i do not have any experience working on the dodge trucks yet. i hope this helps you a little in narrowing your issue down. good luck

If you disconnect the plug to the alternator and then the hot lead from the alternator to the battery you will have than removed the alternator as a possibility.

It could be a lot of things. Like Realest said, narrow down the circuit and we'll be more prone to be of help. There was a discussion a while back about something keeping the signal bus awake draining the battery(s).
