AMP Powerstep, Good, Bad, undecided?

Hi Guys,
First post. I am new to the forum but not to diesel trucking. I just bought a 2007.5 Ram 2500 4x4. Prior truck still with us a '98 2500 5 speed. My wife has some limited mobility due to knee injuries when working cattle. She needs (and I'm lazy enough to need) a good body step. I recently saw the AMP Powerstep demonstrated. Very nice looking and tucks up nice out of sight when not in use. My question is has anyone on here used one? Good results? the second question is caused by my truck being a STANDARD CAB long bed. AMP doesn't make a kit for the standard cab, so I'll be needing to modify the step. I really want to be sure before plunking down the cash! I wondered if anybody else has done this mod., (shortening the quad cab step) for this product. Thanks to all for your comments,
Bill

They were way too expensive for me at 1200bones.

I just picked up a set(two actually) of Ranch Hand steps, sturdy and bolt to the frame, no drilling and NO flex. I really didnt want to buy any steps/bars that mount to the pinch weld.

Even with my truck lifted 4", and on 35s(making it another 2" taller), my 4'11" girlfriend can get in with no problems...

Yes that is the drawback too much money. Wish the wife had never seen them They did a patent to prevent imitation. (curses the luck) They should cost about 1/2 as much.

I have been running them for over two years, never any problems or glitches. They are absolutely awesome. I think for aesthetics they are worth it and they drop much more then a set of nerf bars. I highly recommend them.

Crash, Agreed that they are a great looking step. My wife likes the longer drop too. We bought a 6 speed auto in the new truck because she can't clutch properly because of her knee. Torqued her off too, she prefers the manual. The lower step height helps her a lot. We just have Westin nerf bars on the old truck, but they don't really have that much drop. Thanks

I put the Powersteps on my 07 4X4 Mega for my wife. She had a great deal of difficulty getting in and out of it. (Spinal surgery) Man they are expensive, but they also drop down 8" which really helps the little woman. She has commented several times that these steps are the best add-on I've put on the truck. As a side note I am 240 and there is NO flex in the step when I step on. I can't help with the modifications you want to do, but their website does list several "authorized trained installers". Maybe a call to one of these might give you the answers. Good Luck.

My wife saw them when we looked at the new truck. Yeah, we have them. I have the quad. They've been on a year now and I have no complaints. They certainly have the !WOW! factor when folks see them operate. I've heard reports of jamming when used in icy, snowy climes but that doesn't apply here in sunny Californy. I'm not sure about making them shorter. you probably could but that's a hefty price if you make a mistake.

Thanks for the info Dan,
I'm a central California person. The only time our trucks see snow is when we WANT them to. We do have family in Utah though. Not much crud. My wife did sink the old truck to the floor boards once though. Of course then it's easy to get out!

I got rid of nerf bars and put the AMP Research Power steps on. Man am I and the wife happy. They stay up out of the way when the doors close and protect the under body in the process. If I get another truck they will have them installed from the dealership, they may cost a few bones but are worth it.

I had these put on my 05 F250. BEST mod EVER put on. i absolutly loved them as well as everyone else that climbed into my truck. I would pull up to get gas and people would be amazed when I pulled up and they went down and then up. I would always be stopped.

I liked that they dissapeared and no step at all was visible. Steps are uglyh on trucks. they take away form the clean lines.

Hello,

We had them on our GMC last year.... They work GREAT and do what they say that will do.... I LOVED them!!! They are fast up and down and never had any issues...... They did go away with the GMC, and now that we have the new DC, im saving to get another set. IMOP worth it!! If you like the look of a truck with no step, but you or your wife 'would like something so step on to get it' these are AWESOME....... JMOP !!!

I absolutely love mine. The kids and wife think they are very cool. They also drop lower than a normal nerf bar and then tuck up out of the way, out of sight. Gives the truck a better, cleaner look in my opinion. I haven't had a bit of trouble with them but have only had them 2 months or so. I have had them pretty muddy, though, with no ill effects. No snow yet, but plan too get them icy , muddy and snowy so we will see what happens.

I forgot to mention I have had mine VERY muddy and in lots of snow when I took a trip to oregon. The door opened and the step came otu every time and retracted every time. They cleaned right up too.
