am i getting the run around on my stereo question?
am i getting the run around on my stereo question?
I have the infinity sound system and I have installed the Rb1 nav head unit. I have a set of Edit speakers that I want to put in the back doors. but everytime I go to buy the adapters for the factory harness the install guy says they wont work because of the factory wiring? something to do with the amp. at first I thought this was nuts but I have heard it from two different places. one even said that it might fry my head unit. so has anyone heard of this or has anyone done this. thanks
I don't have the infinity system, but I remember reading in some other thread that the amps are part of the factory infinity speakers.
As far as frying your head unit, I don't think so... However you may need an aftermarket amp to run your new speakers. I know in the computer world, too little power is just as bad as too much, it may be the same for car sound systems, in that too much draw from bigger speakers could damage the head unit, but I'm not sure I believe this.
Good luck,
Sam

Here a link to a site that has a lot of good information on audio upgrades

there is speaker level output from the OEM deck, and the infinity Amp (behind the dash?) powers the speakers.
it's a crappy way to do it, should be line level, but oh well.
I know the GM Monsoon systems are 2 Ohm, and aftermarket 4 ohm speakers sound like crap, but the OEM monsoon speakers last ~6 months.
of course, my front door infinity speaker is rattling too. joy.
just cut the wires and put them in, be ok.

The best thing to do is overide the entire stock unit and just add a HU, wires an amp and speakers... if not just use a new HU going to stock speakers or new HU going to new speakers. I would not use stock HU going to new speakers. No point.

I have the same truck with the same sound system, but no nav. I've just finished installing an aftermarket sub in a Q-logic box under the rear seat. I also installed a mono amp using speaker level inputs off of the front speaker wires because on my system there is no way to use low level inputs out of the HU or the stock amp.
I also thought of installing new door speakers in all four doors because I pulled the drivers door panel and looked at the Infinity 6x9 and it looked like a piece of crap. Guess what? I got my Dvom out and ohmed the speakers and unfortunately it is a 2 ohm speaker. That is how they get decent volume out of a very small factory amp. I called crutchfield and they told me that no one makes aftermarket 2 ohm speakers. I believe if you use 4 Ohm speakers that you will only get half the volume.
Crutchfield told me that they did not show the stock speakers as being 2 Ohms, but I double checked and they are. Also, all the wiring diagrams that Crutchfield has for 2002 -up trucks with the premium sound system are wrong. None of the wire colors match what is in my truck at all. I got a partially correct diagram from AllData.
All this means that you cannot change the speakers without either adding another amp to run the door speakers and using speaker level inputs, or changing the Hu and adding another amp so you can use RCA inputs to the amp. Hope all this helps.

I hear ya the same problem happened to me
Here Is a picture of the amp thats on the back of the speaker inside the drivers door you'll see many wires...... there all tied in to the others speakers and of course the head unit. youll have to get a small adapter to go from the harness in your door to the new speaker this harness will just utilize the input pos and neg for the speaker in the drivers door I have a coponet system so my little tweeter on my piller is also fueled from this harness. the factory amp gets blocked off and wastes power from your new head unit thats ware a perifeal comes in it goes between a aftermarket head unit and the factory harness in the dash it cancels out the factory amp and restores the stearing collum controls. After installing the drivers door speaker you will have no juice to your rear speaker I played around for 3 hrs and couldnt find the right combo to restore signal the the factory harness thats in the rear door. I ended up putting a amp under my rear seat and running RCA jacks off the rear chanel of the head unit and I got my input signal there.and just tied into the wires running under the carpet into the rear doors.
I hope you understand I nearly confused myself.
your not alone on this matter i scrached my head also and just put in 2 RF amps now im really happy

INfinity
I put in a new HU to replace the factory system, and had to run new wires to all the speakers due to the amp set-ups the Infinity system has; Next stop - new speakers! ...as soon as I can find a decent sounding set that will fit in the front doors
dieselminded.
My truck is the only one I can go off of so I can only say that mine definately does not have any amps attached to the backs of the speakers, that may have been like that on the second Gen trucks.

yeah your 3rd gens might be diffrent
even 2nd gens were diffrent there was the infinity sound sytem with all the amps and there was the standard system . so he might have the infinity sound and while yours might be standard.
either way 2nd or 3rd gen he is having the same problem I had so the solution is likely to be the same.
