6.7 Usage - Will I have problems

I'v found a '07.5 with a 6.7 and a manual transmission. My existing '94 is going in for trade. I pull a little over 5-6K and I have to deal with steep
boat launches (putting a jet in rivers etc.). The truck would be driven a couple times a week in Seattle I-405 traffic when I can't use the primary
vehicle.

My question. I live very close to Coulon park (Lake Washington). I'm worried that when I hook up the boat I won't get enough heat in the Emissions system to keep from clogging in between road trips. I maybe have to tow 3-4miles and then I'm in the water. Seems the primary issue with the DPF's is not enough heat to keep them self regulating. Anyone have any information on this? I don't want to step into a problem with my Short distance Hauls.

By the way.... Thanks for the years of learning and info to all who have contributed over the years.... Been driving my '94 for 9 years. New family member on the way and it is time for a quad cab, hence the shopping for a new truck.

unless you make it a point to get it out every week or so and run it for around 40 minutes, to regen, then the short trips will cause more soot build and the 2262 & 1451 codes. i love my truck. i have a mega dually with the g56. mine has been in the shop several times (11,000miles) now for the same reasons. i use mine for my landscape business, so my trips are short too. i finally ordered the 5" turbo back exhaust and egr delte. that wll solve my problems and hopefully increase my mileage.

Fuel Economy...

with your short trips? What are you seeing?

Did you get to watch or even know about the "video" from Dodge that is supposed to tell us how to drive these engines? Sorry for the repeated mileage questions, but it is pretty important with a 10yr commitment on a rig that is 30K.

Are you comfortable with voiding your warantee with the Delete kits?

Most of my research has been on the DPF. Does anyone have anything to say about the EGR system? I recall seeing somewhere it needs to be serviced somewhere around 60K.

i am getting a steady 11.5-12 mpg in town right now avg. with and without trailer). i am fine with the warranty issue. i spoke with the diesel tech and service manager at my dealer and both sounded ok with the deletes. they know (and stated) that almost every issue with these new trucks is emissions related. that is the only trouble i've had with mine. i do drive it hard. have a heavy foot. always been a believer (even in gassers) that running them good and working them keeps them cleaner. as for the egr, get rid of it too. there are several places making delte kits to do so now. some only do the intake side, which is all that is really necessary, but some do the full egr and cooler delete.

I think if you change the exhaust you'll loose your exhaust warranty . That's what the service manager at a GM dealer told me on a car I owned.

on a car you may just lose your exhaust warranty, but on these trucks you better plan on losing the engine warranty. my guys seemed cool with it, but dodge would certainly not be.

Not to mention the violation of Federal Emissions laws. Hefty fines go with these. The feds are targeting shops specializing in high performance cars even. They just told a friend that installing headers on an 08 could result in $50000 fine. Just because the catalytic converters are moved from the original location.

Unhappy Fellow Jet Boater

I'm just learning to jet. Been using the boat in the lake. I found the first put-in I'm comfortable trying out by Duvall off of hwy 203 (haven't been on the Snoqualmie yet). This ramp is steep. I'm wondering if I would be better off with an auto for controling the load in tougher situations like that. I try to work at being smooth and acurate with shifting and starting ( I hate shocking my drive trains), but I'm not a professional trucker either (someone who can start a manual with/out any roll-back like it was second nature).

I've found a Quad Cab Short Box that I like with a manual. Do you prefer the auto for launching boats. I'm trying to stay with the shortest pickup I can and still grow for a family. I've seen some launches on the Salmon that a long truck and trailer could be the difference between turning around and backing up for a long ways...

What is your take on this? The boss would rather have a Mega Cab. I personaly hate long vehicles. Those that drive them haven't done too much back country driving where turning around can get dam difficult even with a Blazer/Ram Charger type wheel base. I guess I can't let that go, even though I haven't been in a tough situation like that for a long time.

agree with the thought that things are probably going to get a lot harder to modify our tools to better suit our needs. Changing air restrictions, adding fuel etc, whatever it may be... but this leads into a whole different can of worms and how we have ended up at this point.

How would that effect the engine warranty? I mean if it really caused problems they'd be apparent already.

Heck I think dodge would thank you.

For what you're doing I'd suggest looking for an 04.5 through 07 5.9 set up the way you want it. You're already looking at a used one, so why not go with the one that is better on shorter trips? I'm guessing there's 5.9's for sale out there, but I haven't been looking. And no, you can't have mine - I'm keeping it until the wheels fall off. I sure would like a new Mega with the 6.7 and an auto, but I'm waaaayyyyyyy too leery of the emissions stuff.

Of couse, Dodge might change my mind if they did the lifetime powertrain warranty (and optional lifetime non-powertrain warranty) on the diesels, but I don't really feel like paying for turbo cleanings, egr cleanings, dpf problems, etc., etc., on one of those 6.7's when they're out of warranty.

No thanks - I'll stick with my Quad and a 5.9, thank you.
