285 vs. 305 vs. 315

What a tough decision between these tires. I tow only my boat, which loaded is around 4k lbs. On highway does the 315 with an automatic and 3.73 gears hurt the tranny? Will it be under powered?

What about fuel economy between the three tires? It has to not rub at all off road. I am scared to go with the 315s because of rubbing and possible tranny problems with the gearing and being underpowered? Whats your thoughts guys?

I have an 07 4x4 5.9 auto with 3.73 gears.

Love my 305's. No rubbing at all. Ride is good and I didn't notice any mileage or power losses.

I've got the same dillemma.. I really want the 315's, but I am afraid they are going to rub too much, as I don't have a leveling kit yet, mostly because I can't find the time to install one, and I don't want to pay someone to do it.

I tow about the same weight, right around 4K, and I've never felt the 315's were too much tire. My truck has never felt strained maintaining speed, despite any headwinds or hills, and it's never felt as if it were geared too tall while towing. If I were towing twice the weight, or if I regularly drove/towed in hilly country, I'd feel better with 4:10's, but i'm confident that these trucks are easily capable of pulling decent loads with 3:73's and 315 tires, at least here in the desert southwest where you have to look pretty hard to find any long steep hills. 75 mph with 315's and 3:73 gears is right around 1900-2000 rpm, right in the sweet spot (at least on my truck).

Keep in mind with the front hubs the bearings aren't spaced apart very much at all. Which won't matter as badly with skinny 265's but the wider and more massive you go the harder it gets on them.

I just had 285/75-17E rated Toyo's installed. The stock tire size using the age old formula is 31.6". The Toyo's are 33.8". I feel this was the safest tire for stock rims the way I drive. I know people say the 12.5" wide tire will go on an 8" rim, but did not want to chance it. My speedo is corrected, and my mileage is .7 mpg less around town and short highway trips of less than 100 miles each way. Truck is "un" loaded with 1000 lbs. of tool box. Little slower off the line, but I did not buy a drag package.
3.73 gears.

You will never know the difference between 305's & 315's. I have never had problems running 315's ,but did get maybe a mile less per gallon between 285's & 315's.

My last trip I got I got 22.8 mpg (hand calc) with 315's I love them they fill in the wheel well. they rub just a little on hills. I do also tow and these tires keep the rpm's down on the highway. In my opinion they look great on these trucks

I ran BFG 315s for 55k miles, the first 10k or so with no performance or tc/trans upgrades. I did not feel any real loss of power and they definitely keep rpms down on the highway. City driving will suffer mpg with 315s, but highway was about the same. You can have some rubbing at full lock without lift or leveling kit and 315s. I agree the 315s seem to be the perfect size for the truck and wheel wells. I switched to 285s for a couple of reasons and they are fine. But I miss the 315s look and height and will go back to them when need tires again.
