Question 22.5" split rims fit a 3rd gen?

For you guys who put who have 22.5" rims on your truck...are they "split" rims? Just curious. I met a guy who is selling about 20 or so "split" rims from a semi truck. This might be a cheap way to put 22.5" rims on a truck.

I dont have 22.5s but looking into getting a set Cant imagine anyone would put a split rim on there truck. You mainly see those split rims on trailers now days.

I don’t mean to sound so ignorant, but how can you tell the difference? These rims seemed really deep, and they were white.

Those split rims you are referring to are normally called Dayton rims. The Daytons are split and the Bud wheels are one piece. I have the 22.5 Alcoas on my truck. Years ago, I had Dayton split wheels on my 1979 International cabover tractor. They are very hard to balance, hard to get the outter rim and the center hub aligned and all in all, a real pain in the butt. They are still used on some trailers, but mostly on container trailers they don't see a lot of highway miles. My advice, stay away from them for your Dodge. Get the Alcoas, and don't look back.

First off, a split rim is a tube type. They can come two different ways, dayton style(which uses a large hub with spacer and wedges to hold them on) and bud (uses two different lug nuts to hold the duals on, single wheel uses large studs and one lugnut)

As far as I know the adapters that you need to put the 22.5 10 lug truck wheels all require you to use the uni-mount or hub pilot wheels. It uses one lugnut to hold both duals on.

I don't remember the split rims coming in 22.5, the ones I remember come in 20inch mostly today seen on container trailers running 10.00x20 tire.

To sum it up STAY AWAY FROM THEM, THEY CAN KILL YOU!!! If you have ever seen on come apart you will understand why.

If they are anything like "split rims" from the sixties and seventies when I was busting tires, Daniel is right, very dangerous. Most tire busters won't even touch them.

Yeah, stay away from the split wheels. They have been illegal here in Tennessee for years now. Very dangerous! People have been killed with those! Thank goodness, they won't fit the adaptors anyway.

Wow, Thanks for all the good info guys. The guy who selling the rims did say they were "dangerous" rims because they were split rims, but by looking at them, I couldn't tell.

I was curious if this would work on a Dodge and maybe save some $ in the process. But it sounds like these rims are better in someones yard then on someones truck!

Again, thanks for the great info.

Hate bringing back a thread this old but I found it through a google search while looking for wheels for a GMC semi I have. Those wheels are NOT split rims and are not illegal in any state. Those are split RING rims.No where near the same things.Split rims have 2 halves held together by a ring.Split rings are a conventional one piece rim except they made one lip a ring. The Bead of the tire holds that ring into a groove. So if you clean the groove and dont' used a damaged ring they are as safe as a normal 1 peice wheel. After the bead seats there is no way other than a catastrophic failure of the tire for the wheel to come apart in any way. Also,Wobble wheels or daytons are not that hard to center. You just have to keep everything clean of rust and dirt and don't use junk parts. If it is damaged don't use it.They ain't just a lazy mans throw it on there and it works perfect type deal though. You might have to turn the wheel or ring a little to get it perfectly straight but daytons are so much lighter than buds. Also use correct wedges and make sure they are tight or the wheels will spin on the spider and cut the valve stem.I actually like the looks of clean daytons better than buds any day.Wish alcoa could be sweet talked into making some pickup truck wheels that had the look and detail of daytons even if it was a bud style.
