06 Wood Grain Dash
06 Wood Grain Dash
I drove an 06 SLT for a week. See earlier post. Have to agree, that wood crap is just plain ugly. I like the dash on mine alot better, although the lites for the climate control have all given up the ghost. I pulled the unit out thinking I could just replace the bulbs - of course not, bulbs are part of the circuit board for the unit. Now when I'm driving at night, most of the time, I have this "black hole in the middle of my dash.
I was doing a search on something totally unrelated, and ran across this dinosaur on interior trim ..... I never knew there was a carbon fiber (look) dash. Only thought they came in funky wood and space ship aluminum... Post up some pics of your carbon fiber dashes!!...
Great...just when i was starting not to notice the wood grain so much...
Project Interior make over here we go!!!....
On with the pics!

I have an '07 SLT, with the brushed alum dash and door inserts. I happen to like the wood grain look, and might change it sometime in the future.
It's just plastic with an overlay. Clean it, sand it with 1000 grit paper, and spray it with some Duplicolor specifically for plastic. Get any color or finish you want. A silver hammer tone would be interesting. Removal is pretty simple, too. Two screws and it comes out. If you have the console, you have to remove that first. Start in the rear and move foreward.
The door inserts are a bit more difficult to deal with, but certainly not impossible for the average home mechanic. Removal requres removal of the door panel. And then some replacement plastic "rivits" to put it back together.

As far as painting....

I have a better chance of winning the lottery then getting it to come out right...

and for the price of a new one (dealer on ebay has all the color combos for 130) cant go wrong... I like the slate grey and carbon fiber

There is some over lay kits on EBay. I have seen the wood, brushed alum and carbon fiber.
Hope this might help some out

My Big Horn/SLT '06 has the wood grain. I'm not a fan. I'll eventually replace it with some nice leather when I have time to work on it. I've already wrapped the steering wheel since it got pretty slick.

I used some 4/5oz veg tan. I left it plain, no tooling, nothing fancy. I didn't even dye/finish it. Just stitched it on and called it good.
I might redo it when I'm back in the shop again now that I've got an idea for it. I do leatherwork so I'll pimp my ride here for my trade

I have read threads on here by those that have used the Wheelskins from Geno's, here's a link:

If I ever need to cover mine, I'd try this one.
Good luck.
