'06 Bad Tach - FIXED IT!
Well, actually, I did not do the work myself but it is fixed and I can highly recommend this as a least cost option of getting it to work again.
I had the tach problems that many have posted and lamented about. It reads low, it reads high, it jumps around, it winds around.
I sent it to a place called Mr. Whizzard (google it) out of Oakbank, Manitoba, Canada. They just started advertising the '06 Dodge Ram as one of the specific ones they fix. Real people that know their stuff. You will communicate with the owner / repair man. Everything went exactly like advertised.
1. I e-mailed them and they promptly responded as we discussed the issue.
2. I requested the UPS shipping label and they e-mailed it to me the next day.
3. I got the cluster out with great help from this board, thanks everyone!
4. Boxed it up took it to UPS with the pre paid label.
5. Exactly two weeks later I have it back for the exact price quoted, $179.00 US dollars. They even polished the face and they have a 2 year warranty and no odometer resetting issues like a new one from the dealer.
6. I installed it in about 1/4 of the time it took to get it out and all is good again. Works perfect. Real nice on a manual trans.
The only negative of this is that the truck was down for two weeks which seemed longer than it was. Mr. Whizzard says you can drive the vehicle without the cluster but I don't know if that is accurate for this vehicle and I did not try it. I did leave my battery connected and all of the settings for the radio and trip computer were saved.
Overall a great service and they did as advertised and I have a functioning tach for a total of $179 including 2 way shipping and warranty. +1 for this vendor.
I have no affiliation with this vendor, just reporting results from my experience.

Great...I live in B.C. and mine is ****** too,how hard was it to get out? I have the service manual but havent really researched it yet.It is the one things that bugs me most about my truck .Dodge should fix all these for free, the 06 clusters obviously had a design or part change that caused this and Dodge plays dumb and says I never heard of it.Just one more reason I might not buy another Dodge.

Well, it's not just a Dodge thing. I just have to send the instrument cluster for my wife's 2003 Tahoe to have the gauge motors replaced. VERY common problem for Chevy/GMC 2003 and up. I found a guy in TX who will replace all the motors with a lifetime warranty for right around $60.00. I hope to get it back as advertised.

when i talked to my dealer about my tack, he said they would also need to send it out and it would take 1 week, we all know what that translates into in the real world. he also mentioned that i may have to have some computer work done to recognize the cluster, and i may have to have my truck towed in if there is a security issue.
DIY Fix 2006 TACH PROBLEM
Hey guys I have a 2006 RAM 2500 and my tach started acting wacky. Apparently this is a somewhat known common issue. Turns out the cluster doesn't have a tight fit and when the screws get over tightened it warps the PCB which on it are mounted a couple of IC chips and the connections from the pins on these 2 chips tend to fail. All that is necessary to repair is to reflow the solder on the pins of these 2 chips and shim the board at the mounting screws that cause the warping. Its a pretty easy DIY fix. Several satisfactory how to vids are on utube. I did mine total time maybe an hour. Difficulty... can you turn a screwdriver and heat up a few solder points?
