Triple Dog
Triple Dog
I haven't had a power added since my Edge EZ for my 2003 any way I have an 08 dually know and all my original intentions were to leave it alone. But that fact of crappy milage that it get and I have a 37' Jayco 5ver now got me to thinking a little added power might be nice.
I don't want to do exhaust, or cold air intake, or any of the rest of that. Been their done that. Just want a plug it in to add some power and milage if possible. Like the guage set-up on the Triple Dog.
But am I going to beable to use the 50hp setting in the hills with out the EGT getting too high with stock exhaust? And will it toast my auto tranny that I want to leave alone. Guess I am wonering what the long term results have been on an otherwise stock truck.

As clogged up as the exhaust system is with DPF crap, you'll never get any better milage, you'll get power, but you might end up screwing the truck up with it not being able to breath... I would do a exhaust and SMARTY JR.. thaths just my 0.002
At least spend the money on the dpf delete pipe and get a good tuner like a smarty or an H&S that will turn off the 4th injection event, and prevent any trouble codes that could result in loss of power.
I'm not sure how well the dpf would be able to handle even a 50hp tune, but you probably wouldn't see an increase in mileage just from the simple fact that the truck will have to regen more ofter. Over time it could result in dpf failure.
Your main mileage increases are going to come from turning off the 4th event, and disabling the EGR system. You can not turn off the 4th event if you leave the DPF on.
On a deleted truck with a low tune your egt's are going to be lower than stock, and the transmission should hold up fine if you keep the tune at a safe level.

Sounds like I will just leave it alone. Not worth the hassle and the fact that I have another 50,000 worth of warrenty left that I don't want to loose. Will wait untill I take a trip with the 5ver this spring and see how it pulls it. I know it doesn't have the pull power my 03 with the Edge EZ, exhaust, cold air did. That also had 4.10's and a manual, and got better milage
When your warantee ultimately runs out, please let us know how much of an asset and help it was for you to have it. Mostly likely, you'll just be handling emmissions issues and dealing with that pain the whole time.
You can still have a warantee i,f you do the deletes, on many parts of your system as they must prove the deletes caused any issue in order to deny.

I do realize that. After doing alot of reading it seems that pretty much the max increase in milage people are seeing deleting all emmismions and putting on a power added is around 3-4 mpg. So in 100,000 miles you will save around $5,600 , well if fuel prices go nuts it could be more
. You have to take out what it cost to do the delete and programmer, I have no idea what that stuff is at for price but I would guess you are going to spen $2000 in a hurry.
So that means you saved $3,600 over 100,000 miles. Which is a savings for sure, but for me that is $600 a year, not huge. And I don't tell you how fast you can spend $3,600 on one of these things if something should go wrong and you have a void warrenty. Now I ran my 03 for 70,000 with 0 warrenty issues dealing with the motor, so ya chances are you are ok.
Bottom line is that no one should do this stuff for milage when it comes right down to it. If you are looking for the power or just love playing around with stuff it is great and go for it. I am not pulling as heavy as I was with my 03 so I am not sure I need the extra power any more, the milage is not enough of an increase to be worth the hassle for me. So for me I think I am just going to forget it unless I find that I need an extra little boost for pulling the camper. Now when I hit 100,000 miles it may be a different story.....

The one other benefit that i have come across is that the oil is staying significantly cleaner due to no fuel in the oil from the truck going into regen, if you are going to keep the truck for a long period of time the added life of the engine should also be factored in also. the mini maxx I put in my truck cost me $999 and the dpf delete pipe cost me 60 to build myself, i gained 27% in economy on winter fuel, going to love to see it in the summer when i get some good fuel to run in this thing but thats a story for another time and thread................. bottom line if you see the fuel prices we pay in canada that currently work out to 3.90/ us gallon and it only gets higher in the summer, they become more cost effective all the time
p.s. the extra power is nice too...........and just because you have it available doesnt mean you have to use it
