The butterfly valve part was screwed on, but you have to grind a little of the bolt end off on the side opposite the screw head. It did work though, and I'm out just an $8 gasket.

Blake,

I'm reading this (btw, absolutely incredible write up) and I'm going to delete my '08 even though I'm tested for emissions once every 2 years.

From reading this, I want to do what you did and replace the current intake with an intake horn just so everything stays together and I can shelf it in case I need to do emissions.

What do I need for the EGR cooler side other than just unplugging the servo?

I'm running the H&S MiniMaxx with the 6.7.50 firmware.

If you have to test for emmisions every two years like I do, I would suggest to leave everything alone that you don't "need" to replace... Unless you enjoy this kind of mechanic work. Not sure about the MiniMax but for the EGR Cooler, it is just unplugged with the smarty. You can delete it to but there are some tricky bolts and isn't something you want to do often...

Yep, that's why I want to go with the intake horn replacement. Everything stays together for the intake side of the engine so it's just a few nuts/bolts and some electrical plugs versus me losing the plunger and spring for the EGR on the intake side.

Because I'd lose that in a heartbeat.

LOL, I just put my spring and pluger in a plastic baggy and stuff it in the NOX tube for the exhause I keep in the garage for when I got to play the smog game... Thats it.

Sorry if this is a repeat question, but I just don't have time to read through 40 pages looking for answers.

I am also in California and am going to do the cali delete. I am/was set to buy a smarty jr but have read that it doesn't support dpf delete. I've read mixed reviews about which tuners support and don't support deletes. So if I delete the dpf/nox with a pipe, remove spring and plunger, and unplug the egr and throttle valve, which tuner would support that? Truck is out of warranty, has 100k miles bone stock. Thanks. Amazing original write up btw.

You are correct in that current US Smarty tuners cannot support deletes, BUT Pre EPA crackdown Smarty tuners can do the delete tuning. You just need to find one that's unlocked and has a "P" or "A" in the serial number. Raceme (the offshore clone of the Smarty tuners) also are delete capable. I wouldn't recommend an H&S or TorqueTech tuners as they're out of business and have zero support (although they were great tuners). And lastly EFI tuning (multiple levels of tuning options and costs).
So get the one you want, go pass smog, pull up in your driveway and get rid of some crap for 23 months (you need to revert back to stock tuning and equipment at least a month prior to testing to get the OBD I\M's to reset and pass smog).

Gotcha, thanks for the info. Let's say i was in a smog exempt state, if I bought a smarty jr from let's say diesel power products website, would they ship a tuner that is delete capable? Or are all newly purchased smartys non delete capable no matter which state I order from?

Wow I just look up raceme and holy crap it's expensive, I liked the $500 price on the smarty jr.

ALL the current US Smarty tuners are NOT delete capable. That's why I said you can source a pre EPA Smarty tuner for deletes. These sell in the $350-500 range.
If you compare the prices on the EPA emission legal tuners you'll understand why the US Smarty is priced that low.
There's other options out there for delete capable tuning, it just depends what you want. The EFI Lite tuning runs around $600 and higher prices based on higher tuning options.

Ok it's starting to make sense to me now. I just stumbled across a thread a few years back and you had a lot of input on that as well that explained a lot. I'm not looking for loads of power or to puff smoke. I just don't like the idea of recirculating exhaust. I want a clean running engine and better mpg. Also don't want to blow anything up (trans). I just bought the truck and I can't afford to break anything yet. Just want to delete the filters and make it sound meaner. Thanks.

I deleted my 2011 with a dpf emulator kit by Gearboxz and some odd things are happening. The truck smokes pretty bad at take off and under hard acceleration. Then two days ago, it made a massive pile of soot flakes at start up.
Any ideas? Could this be that the egr needs to go away also? It is still In operation.

I have a 2011 6.7 3500 fully deleted with mini maxx tuner with mild with turbo. Couple questions. First I only get 10 mpg a gallon. What's the deal ? Lol. 2 my remote start works runs for 10 seconds the stops Help !!!

How "mandatory" is the throttle valve delete? Can I get away with just unplugging it?

I'm throwing codes now that temps have dropped and I'm barely seeing 500 degrees on the EGT's from my MiniMaxx, so it's not getting hot enough to do the DPF burn off.

The TCV is optional. Mines been unplugged for a year with no issues.
