yeah thanks, think I'm getting it figgured out now, I had heard diesesl didn't get smogged, so apparently they are cracking down on them in recent years.

Been doing alot of research, and it just sounds like the 6.7 is alot of trouble.

I'm in CA and have yet to be asked to smog my Cummins. Having said that, they will probably do so this year... Anyway, I did some simple and basic upgrades/deletes that make this truck even better than it all ready was, and when the time comes, I will put it back to stock (relatively easily compared with so many other things in life) and take care of the **** smog BS and then go right back to improving my vehicle with the programmer and deletes.

right-on, well good luck to you. one of my problems was that I was buying it out-of-state, so it would've needed a visual inspection before I could've gotten her registered, no biggie, but what if for some reason it didn't pass, ya know? $30,000 paper weight!

My 08 has 110,000 miles and is stock and only a sticky EGR valve that had to be replace. Most dependable truck I have owned. My 02 had pump problems at 157,000 miles. I have not had any DPF or Turbo clogging yet.

good to know, yeah, Ram seems like it's the last of the Great American trucks, manual transmission, transfer case, and a bench seat. Oh, and don't forget that solid axle!
Sounds like you are maybe towing a camper Brian? I might price one out sans Cummins, can't get Dodge's build your own function to work, however. Good to hear you are happy with yours.

My 08 CTD has been excellent! I have a smarty sitting on the shelf I will install when it warms up come spring time. My only complaint is the nasty oil and poor mpg. That's where the smarty comes in. A mild tune and 20mpg is good for me.

Stock

My 09 is totally stock and has 14,000 miles trouble free. I am happy with the power. With my 10,000 enclosed car trailer it pulls almost any grade I want at 65 in 4th. Sometimes seems to struggle more than others, but I figure it varies depending on the condition of the particulate trap at the "bottom of the hill". It also will pull really well at 75 on flat roads.

I am considering using a programmer and leaving all the smog equipment in place. I am in California and I had to SMOG CHECK my truck on my very first registration renewal. YES, they brought he newer Diesels into the loop. He checked under the truck, under the hood twice and plugged into the diagnostic link with his computer, but did NOT sniff the tailpipe or start the truck. So it was just a visual and computer check.

Good information here, thanks. I'm not far away from you in Ontario...
Did you just take it to any old station that does "smog checks"? I'm thinking they don't really have the tools to sniff then yet? If it is just visual and computer (I guess checking for CEL?) then what are they tranferring to the DMV to allow registration? Just a "Pass".

Smog check

My truck actually has 17,000 trouble free miles.

Yes, I took it to any old Smog Check place. He argued with me and said I was exempt and I showed him my registration form and he did some looking and said he would do it.
Yes I figure he plugged into the Diagnostic link just in case the "check Engine" light was burned out and to check that all the truck's routine smog system checks in the computer were up to date.

Yes, he transmitted a "pass" to the DMV. Because when I sent in my registration, it went through without any problems. I renewed on line. You have to love computers.

I'm thinking that maybe if my registration ever comes in with smog check needed, I will send in the money first/early and see... IF really needed, they should send something back confirming I still need to "transmit" a "pass" based on what sounds like a visual inspection and OBDII CEL check.

Seems like it would be VERY reasonable to find an understanding/sympathetic guy to push that transmit/pass button for us and save me having to bolt stuff on/off for no real reason.

Simple solution, just stick a 4BT into that ol' Ranger. That'll get you started in the Diesel World.

I had a 2006 5.9L 2500 Automatic 4X4, Quad Cab SLT, new in 06 and put over 56K miles on it. It was all stock. A couple of minor problems, nothing major. Traded it in April 2010 for a 2007 6.7L Automatic 3500 4X4 Quad Cab LB Dually. Purchased with 47,392 miles. It is all stock. Checked Dodge and Carfax for prior problems/service work. Aside from normal maintenance no problems. Now have 56,954 miles without any problems. I too was concerned about all the emmissions problems, however seem to be OK for now.
